Overview

Mercy Center is a comprehensive community center that has been serving women, men and their families in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx, NY for over 33 years.  Our Social Services & Community Education program provides individual case management, advocacy, and referrals for participants who are enrolled in other Mercy Center programs. The department also offers workshops on topics that are relevant to our participants.

We are seeking a Case Manager/Community Educator to (a) provide direct comprehensive case management, service planning, advocacy, and referrals for our Adult Education and other program participants; and (b) coordinate a series of educational workshops relevant to our largely immigrant participants, including presenting some workshops and recruiting outside presenters for others.  This is a full-time, 40 hour/week in-person position that will require flexibility in scheduling to include one evening shift per week when evening programs are operating.

Responsibilities

  • Provide social services case management, advocacy and referrals for Mercy Center program participants regarding issues such as housing, public benefits, domestic violence, child protective services, taxes, immigration, and children’s educational issues
  • Accept referrals from staff of other Mercy Center programs and work collaboratively to ensure that participants’ ongoing needs are met
  • Coordinate MercyCenter program outreach activities, i.e. organize and lead distribution of fall, winter and spring promotional materials
  • Coordinate community education workshops and events, including presenting workshops, recruiting outside presenters and developing relationships with other service providers
  • Serve as liaison with other social service agencies and Mott Haven Community Partnership
  • Develop and help maintain Mercy Center’s presence in the community
  • Compile and analyze program data and reports
  • Provide information needed by Development department for funding proposals
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in social work plus three years of community case management – OR – Bachelor’s degree in social work plus six years of community case management
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Mercy Center’s staff, participants,  external organizations and community stakeholders
  • Fluency and literacy in English and Spanish required
  • Experience working with the immigrant community preferred
  • Familiarity and knowledge of Latino culture and the immigrant experience preferred
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask and use self-initiative
  • Computer literacy required, including competence in Microsoft Office and ability to navigate the internet

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Generally works in standard office and program space conditions and climate
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
