Overview
The Position
The Manager, Community & Educational Initiatives is a multi-faceted role that supports the Department of Public Education & Visitor Services (PEVS) at the Cathedral. It requires poised interaction and professionalism with visitors, Cathedral staff, tour operators, schools, teachers, artists, students, volunteers, and administrators. Areas of responsibility center on managing education staff and volunteers, updating tour and programming offerings and curriculum to enhance the group visit experience, and leading school and public programs for diverse audiences; attracting new audiences to participate in programs; overseeing functions in and related to the Medieval Arts Workshop; and handling various administrative duties and daily clerical tasks to support this busy and essential Cathedral department. The Manager, Community & Educational Initiatives must be familiar with Cathedral tours and programs, inquiry-based teaching practices, curriculum and tour development, community outreach, and have an interest in advancing educational programming in a cultural institution.
1. Programming Responsibilities
· Teach school and public programs for diverse audiences: schools, families, adults
· Design, attend, and lead programs for special Cathedral events as needed
· Develop and expand upon existing school and public programs; create new programs as needed
· Schedule all public tours using RocketRez ticketing software
· Maintain supplies for programs and Medieval Arts Workshop
2. Administrative Responsibilities
· Supervise and support Education Assistant(s) in their scheduling of guided and self-guided group programs and choir performances
· Coordinate part-time Cathedral Educator and Volunteer Guide schedules and program assignments
· Manage Educator and Volunteer teams
· Track, record, invoice, and refund group payments
· Assist Director and Cathedral Communications staff in creating publications for departmental programs and initiatives
· Foster relationships and develop programs with Cool Culture and other outreach organizations; advise Director on new partnership opportunities
· Coordinate with Cathedral’s Communications department to promote public programs on the Cathedral’s website and social media
3. Visitor Services Responsibilities
· Supervise the Visitor Center on Fridays and Saturdays; support Visitor Center staff as needed
· Update VC with schedule changes and information
4. Professional Development Responsibilities
· Attended networking events/conferences/workshops in Education industry (NYCMER, NYCAiER, etc.)
· Maintain connections and promote the Cathedral in professional organizations, including school and community fairs
· Assist Director with Educator Training each Fall and throughout the year, as needed
Qualifications
Required:
· Bachelor’s degree in museum education, art history, or a related field, or 8 years of comparable work experience in education and management
· Minimum of five years teaching experience in a museum, cultural institution, or K-12 classroom
· Demonstrated experience leading successful teams of staff and/or volunteers
· Success in building and expanding community partnerships
· Creative, entrepreneurial, and quick-thinking approach to problem solving
· Strong listening, oral, and writing skills
· Exemplary interpersonal, team-building, and conflict resolution skills
· Dependability; attention to detail and time management
· Energy and flexibility in fast-paced environments
· Demonstrated self-motivation and discipline to regularly set and achieve goals
· Calm, patient, and assured demeanor; diplomatic spirit
· A desire to learn about and share the offerings of the Cathedral with the education community
Desired:
· Fluency in Spanish a plus; all foreign language abilities desirable
· Experience with cash handling and data reporting
· Master’s Degree in appropriate field a plus
Schedule
· Tuesday through Saturday schedule.
- Adjusted hours will be necessary for approximately 15 events a year.
