Summary/Objective

A House on Beekman is a flourishing educational non-profit organization located in Mott Haven, South Bronx. Our aim is to empower children to flourish by providing programs that focus on academic, social and emotional growth. Assistant Teachers will join the Preschool team as they support students and families in a holistic, nurturing and supportive manner to ensure each child succeeds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with culturally, ethnically and socio-economically diverse groups of stakeholders (staff, students, parents). 
  • Understanding of and commitment to the philosophy of A House on Beekman.
  • Supporting the teaching of general education as well as individuals with learning challenges and special needs within an inclusive classroom.
  • Supporting the lead teacher with the creation of lesson plans, preparation of documentation displays highlighting student achievements, and entries of observations in the assessment system/portfolio.
  • Flexibility and ability to promptly handle unanticipated situations or emergencies as they arise.
  • Strong personal commitment to ongoing learning and growth.
  • Adherence to all applicable government regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assist lead teacher in creating classroom settings and routines that are providing high-quality instruction that meet DOE/DOHMH requirements and adhere to AHOB’s philosophy of education.
  • Assist lead teacher in the development of new classroom projects and lesson plans.
  • Assist lead teacher in maintaining a nurturing learning environment while ensuring children’s safety and welfare at all times.
  • Collaborate and actively participate on the preschool team alongside other teachers and staff.
  • Build and maintain relationships with families and students.
  • Support lead teacher in the performance of daily health checks and room checks.
  • Attend meetings with the preschool team.
  • Attend professional development and all-staff meetings.

Expected Work Schedule

This is a full-time position, working 40 hours a week.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This role will also require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
