Overview

JOB SUMMARY

The Makerspace Coordinator reports to the Director of STEM Outreach in The Cooper Union College of Engineering. This position serves the STEM Outreach and Makerspace missions to provide education and fabrication resources to Cooper Union students and students participating in STEM Outreach programs. The responsibilities include both supervising and teaching duties for the Makerspace and STEM Outreach programs, including STEM Inventors, STEM Days, STEM Saturday, Summer STEM.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Makerspace Coordinator responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the makerspace, ensuring it is well-stocked and maintained

for student use

  • Develop and maintain lab safety protocols and best practices
  • Maintain and repair lab equipment (or oversee the repair)
  • Develop and maintain material usage tracking system, scrap and recycling initiatives
  • Maintain machine usage statistics
  • Supervise remote monitoring of 3D printers
  • Interview, Hire, Train, and Supervise student workers (Makerspace Operators)
  • Approve student worker hours
  • Assist faculty with class use of the Makerspace, including workshops on equipment best practices
  • Troubleshoot student and faculty project
  • Develop short and long-term planning for materials and upgrades to equipment to meet needs in the School of Engineering and STEM Outreach program

STEM Teacher Responsibilities include:

  • Teach STEM-related workshops and courses, with a focus on hands-on learning and project- based activities.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop innovative programs that engage middle and high school students in STEM fields.
  • Provide support and mentorship to students working on engineering and design projects.

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS

  • A master’s degree in engineering or another STEM field and 2 years of experience teaching project-based learning or a bachelor’s degree in engineering and 5 years of experience teaching project-based learning.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office) and a willingness to learn new database platforms
  • Strong organizational multitasking skills, as well as close attention to detail necessary.
  • Be able to work evenings and weekends
  • Must be an outgoing self-starter and possess the ability to work efficiently, with discretion, tact, and flexibility, as part of a team.

EDUCATION

Masters degree in Engineering or another STEM field or Bachelors Degree (see above)

This is a Full Time, Non-Exempt, Union position.
