The Rule of Law Lab at NYU law school is seeking applicants for a full-time staff counsel or staff advisor position. This is a one year position that is renewable subject to funding.

About the Rule of Law Lab at NYU law school

The Rule of Law Lab (ROLL) is a new global project that will commence operations at NYU law school on August 1, 2025. ROLL’s mission is to study and deploy legal tools (litigation, legal research, documentation, and advocacy) to defend democracy and the rule of law around the world (including in the US), while also engaging students in experiential learning. Core themes covered include judicial and prosecutorial independence and accountability, freedom of expression, freedom from discrimination, and electoral integrity. The Lab will address these issues in the Americas, Europe, and Africa.

The position will entail:

  1. Developing and implementing, in collaboration with ROLL’s faculty director, ROLL’s strategy.
  2. Legal research, writing, documentation, litigation, and advocacy in support of ROLL’s projects around the world, including in the US.
  3. Assisting in public education and knowledge dissemination relating to ROLL’s work.
  4. Assisting the faculty director in fundraising and administrative tasks for ROLL.
  5. Assisting the faculty director in engaging students working with ROLL.

Qualifications

Requirements and Qualifications

  1. Commitment to advancing the Rule of Law Lab’s mission
  2. Law degree from the US or other country in Latin America, Europe, or Africa with superior academic achievement
  3. 3+ years of relevant experience in US civil rights and/or international human rights litigation and documentation in Latin America, Europe, and/or Africa required
  4. Excellent research, writing, and editing skills required
  5. Ability to navigate high-stakes situations under time pressure required
  6. Ability to travel in the US and internationally required
  7. Diplomatic skills in navigating varying cultures required
  8. Admission to the New York Bar preferred
  9. Proficiency in Spanish and French preferred
