Overview

Organization Mission:

Harlem Academy drives equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at

the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world. As the only independent

K-8 school in Manhattan dedicated to serving promising, low-income students, Harlem Academy

fills a critical gap in the education landscape. Our program propels students to the top echelons

of academic performance and then supports them on the path to and through college and into

careers. The school has been recognized as an innovative model and regularly publishes best

practices in leading education journals and think tanks.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the development director, the development and communications associate will

work with the development team on the execution of communications, annual giving, and

donor cultivation strategies for the year.

Communications

  • Write articles for all major print and electronic communications (HA Journal, annual

report, brochure, press releases, and eblasts), offering a window into the life of the

school for parents and supporters

  • Photograph, video, and report on school activities, including all events
  • Serve as liaison to freelance photographer; manage photo and video files (Google

Photos, Vimeo, Issuu)

  • Manage work with printer and mailer for publications
  • Lead video production as needed

Development

  • Manage mailings, including collaboration with the printer and mail house, in-house

appeals, and foundation outreach

  • Research individual and foundation prospects
  • Support the successful implementation of donor and volunteer meetings and events
  • Scan gifts and manage acknowledgment letters
  • Support Raiser’s Edge data entry as needed
  • Support general development, communications, and strategy work as needed

Qualifications:

  • 3-4 years of related experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and demonstrated interest in the school’s mission
  • Excellent writer and storyteller
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to relate well with students, staff, supporters,

and external vendors

  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills, including ability to schedule

long-term projects and flexibility for last-minute opportunities

  • Raiser’s Edge or other database experience a plus
