Overview
Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF) is a comprehensive supplemental education and youth development organization that works to help motivated students develop the intellectual curiosity, academic ability, social values, and personal resilience they need to ensure success in school, career, and life. HEAF identifies scholars in middle school and supports them until they are successfully admitted to four-year colleges through a variety of after-school, summer educational, and youth development programs.
Program Details:
· Program Dates: September 28th, 2022 – June 2nd, 2023
· Program Days – 3 days per week (Mon, Tues, Thurs) 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm.
· Hours: 6 instructional hours per week, 1 administrative hour per week
· Location: In Person – 51-35 Reeder St 2nd Floor, Queens, NY 11373
Summary:
The Afterschool Tutor acts as a positive adult role model, coach, and mentor. Tutors must be genuinely interested in the growth, development, and provision of a safe and nurturing environment for the students they teach. A tutor’s ability to establish authority and connections through leadership, communication, and, most importantly, patience will be required in giving our students the stability and nurturing atmosphere they need to succeed.
Ideal Candidate Has:
· At least 60 college credits (required).
· Bachelor’s degree in education or equivalent (preferred).
· Previous experience working with middle school-aged children would be advantageous.
· Well-organized with excellent communication skills.
· Solid understanding of classroom activities and teaching best practices.
· Excellent interpersonal and classroom management skills.
· Willingness to promote HEAF educational and youth development philosophy.
· Ability to work collaboratively with the HEAF staff.
· Ability and willingness to commit to the entire program.
Responsibilities:
- Provide homework assistance and academic enrichment using materials provided by the program.
- Create an engaging setting that establishes a sense of belonging in children.
- Promote positive interactions between volunteers and students in accordance with child safety guidelines.
- Maintain student safety by taking roll and reviewing sign-in/ sign-outs for students.
- Identify student needs and communicate to the Site Coordinator, program manager, or site director.
- Commit to a full-year program, demonstrated by arriving on time every day.
HEAF Vaccination Policy:
We require all HEAF new hires to be vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 before their start date.
Compensation:
$50/hour for instruction
$15/hour for meetings and administrative duties
