Overview
Founded in 1966, UPROSE is an intergenerational, BIWOC-led, internationally recognized community organization working at the intersection of racial justice and climate change through community-based planning and research, policy advocacy, popular education, organizing, artistic expression, and youth leadership development.
The Deputy Director will have well-developed management skills to provide the capacity needed for UPROSE to expand its goals and scope of work. The Deputy Director will have the experience and temperament needed to maintain a consistent and structured workplace in the midst of a challenging, dynamic, and often unpredictable political and policy environment. The Deputy Director will report to the Executive Director and will directly supervise a staff team of organizers, policy advocates, scientists, and administrative workers, as well as consultants.
This is a full-time position with a complete and fully employer-funded benefits package. UPROSE is looking for someone who can work in-person full-time Monday-Friday in our Sunset Park, Brooklyn office. Candidates must be able to work in a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and occasional travel. Responsibilities:
- • Represent and act on behalf of the Executive Director when necessary, and as defined by the Executive Director
- • Manage the day-to-day operations of UPROSE
- • Supervise all UPROSE staff, unless otherwise directed by the Executive Director
- • Coordinate UPROSE staff teamwork, identifying and supporting shared goals and responsibilities, as well joint activities
- • Facilitate UPROSE staff meetings
- • Manage relationships with a variety of external organizations connected to UPROSE’s work, including partners, coalition leadership, elected officials, sub-contractors, and so on, as directed by the Executive Director
- • Prepare and manage UPROSE’s annual work plan
- • Ensure compliance with all funding requirements as described in UPROSE’s contracts and grant agreements
- • Ensure completion and submission of all deliverables required by UPROSE’s contracts and grant agreements
- • Oversee UPROSE administrative functions, including grant management and reporting, contract invoicing, partner and subcontract agreements, bookkeeping, and so on
- • Provide support to the Executive Director, as needed
- • Any additional task or assignment the Executive Director may require, as needed
Job Requirements:
- • Minimum of 10 years of professional management experience
- • Minimum of 10 years of working in community
- • Master’s level education preferred; bachelor’s level required
- • Demonstrated commitment to the basic principle of justice, whether expressed as social, racial, economic, or environmental justice
- • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team setting
- • Outstanding personal organization, time management, and attention to detail
- • Knowledge of basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office, Google, and Adobe Suite applications
- • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- • Good sense of humor
- • Bi-lingual Spanish proficiency preferred
