Win is the largest provider of shelter for families experiencing homeless in New York City. Since 1983, Win has been helping homeless New York City women and their children transform their lives through a progressive and holistic approach that doesn’t simply provide a hand out, but a way out. Win’s life-changing process starts with safe, clean housing and includes vital programs and services developed to break the cycle of homelessness, so the women and children caught in the cycle can look forward to a brighter future!
As a growing and dynamic non-profit, Win is always interested in hiring qualified and professional individuals who will be committed to transforming the lives of homeless women and children in our New York community. Win is seeking an experienced candidate to work as a Computer Literacy Instructor.
Purpose of the Position:
Working collaboratively with the Income Building Specialist, the Computer Literacy Instructor will provide direct instruction and presentations with the purpose of enhancing the client’s computer literacy skills so that participants become marketable in the workplace. The Instructor will use online software and tutorials such as Microsoft Digital Literacy Curriculum. The Instructor will ensure that the participants practice lessons learned from the online software, reinforce lessons through both
individual activities and workshops and teach participants how computers are used in the workplace.
Responsibilities:
· Develop and facilitate curriculum for a six (6) week instructional period aimed at increasing basic computer literacy skills that can assist students in securing employment opportunities within an administrative setting.
· Provide instruction on the fundamentals of operating a computer including using a mouse, a key board, minimizing and maximizing windows and introduction to basic icons.
· Introduce students to web browsers and demonstrate how to conduct searches via the internet (e.g. Chrome/Explorer/Firefox/Google).
· Introduce software programs and teach the basics of the Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
· Demonstrate opening a program or menu, dragging and dropping folders and documents, utilizing a task bar; creating and saving documents.
· Monitor student’s engagement, progress and classroom conduct.
· Provide large and small group instruction as well as one-on-one tutoring.
· Maintain attendance records and submit attendance logs to program staff.
· Complete monthly case notes according to funders’ mandates.
· Host guest speakers, volunteers and/or alternate programming when needed.
· Initiate and participate in case conferencing sessions as needed.
· Perform other related duties.
Essential Functions:
· Must be able to instruct students while sitting and/or standing within the computer lab.
· Must be able to ascend/descend stairs to access the computer lab if necessary.
Qualifications:
· Committed to Win’s Mission.
· Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field.
· Must be adept at instructing students at various skill levels.
· Minimum three years of experience teaching a similar curriculum.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Ability to establish a rapport with students and maintain an environment that supports learning.
· Must be available some evenings.
· Must have experience teaching adults.
· Must be computer literate including experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
