Job Description
The Columbia Nano Initiative (CNI) invites applications for a Research Operations Assistant position in the area of Clean Room and Shared Lab facilities operations. This position operates within the Center for Integrated Science and Engineering (CISE) at The Fu Foundation School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS). The Research Operations Assistant will be responsible for maintaining efficient and effective lab operations under the guidance of the lab staff, including compliance with all University and government requirements and regulations.
The Research Operations Assistant will be primarily responsible for maintaining cleanliness and organization of the CNI shared laboratories, maintaining lab inventory, handling all safety aspects of the labs, maintaining clean room garment inventory, shipping garments to laundry, ordering and restocking of consumables, tracking labs related purchase orders, receiving packages for the lab, assisting with gas cylinder changes and chemical refills, facilitating daily laboratory operations, manage user fees billing and user accounts activations, and assisting the shared facilities lab staff with their own work as requested.
Working under the guidance of the Director of the CNI Shared Laboratories, maintains efficient and effective lab operations. Maintains cleanliness and organization of the CNI shared laboratories. Maintains clean room garment inventory, ships garments to laundry facility, orders and restocks consumables across multiple labs and buildings, receives and processes shipments of purchased materials for the lab, tracks lab-related purchase orders of materials, chemical, consumables, etc. Assists with gas cylinder changes and chemical refills 50%
Assists shared facilities staff with their research projects, including machine setup and maintenance as needed. Handles user fees billing and user accounts activations through lab management software. Handles all safety aspects of the labs, including Clean Room orientation to new users, labs access, after- hours access control, and chemical waste handling and pick-up. Provides access to the labs for users from academic institutions and industrial companies for the CNI External Users Program. 35%
Assists in maintaining compliance with all University and government requirements and regulations, maintains labs equipment inventory, including inventory tracking and assisting in response to audits 10%
Performs other tasks, duties, and responsibilities as assigned. 5%
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma and/or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree a plus. Minimum of three years of experience in a research environment
Must have basic computer proficiency, including MS Office Word and Excel. Knowledge of laboratory operations is a plus. The work may involve the lifting of up to 50lbs of packages and freight including the transportation of compressed gases.
Lab or clean room working experience is an advantage, as well as mechanical aptitude and experience with handling chemical containers.
