Overview: University Settlement partners with 40,000 New Yorkers on the Lower East Side and in Brooklyn every year to build on their strengths as they achieve healthy, stable, and remarkable lives. For over 135 years, we’ve collaborated with our neighbors to pioneer highly effective programs that fight poverty and systemic inequality. 

SONYC STRIDE After School Program is a dynamic program for middle school students (grades 6-8). It is located in our Houston Street Center, a 42,000 square-foot community facility in the Lower East Side that includes recreational, fitness, classroom, meeting and office space for the community. STRIDE offers students academic support as well as a range of fun, engaging clubs based on student interests.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and lead engaging activities for up to 20 youth, ensuring safety and comfort of students throughout program
  • Design and implement lesson plans for multidisciplinary activities using knowledge of positive youth development and incorporating student feedback throughout the school year
  • Ensure that academic assistance is provided during homework period
  • Plan and involve children in a range of multidisciplinary activities, design and implement thematic based lessons
  • Serve as a positive role model for youth and uphold professional behavior at all times
  • Work constructively with co-counselor and other colleagues; communicate regularly with supervisory staff
  • Communicate with parents and caregivers regarding student progress and problem solving
  • Maintain responsibility for designated program supplies and proper use of all facilities, including classrooms
  • Complete all necessary documentation and administrative tasks
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor(s)

 

Qualifications:

  • HS Diploma or HSE required, current enrollment in college is a plus
  • Experience working with middle and high school population
  • Ability to commit for the entire school year from September until June
  • Must be over 18 years old
  • Highly energetic, dynamic, and positive

Hours: 15 hours per week, 3 hours per day, Monday- Friday
