ABOUT THE HENRY KAUFMANN CAMPGROUNDS
Home to 11 independently run JCC day camps, the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds is a small non-profit that manages and operates three facilities located in Long Island, Rockland County and Staten Island.
As a seasonal organization, HKC hires 200+ seasonal workers that provide maintenance and janitorial services, aquatics supervision and security to ensure we can carry out our mission to meet the needs of the camps who camp at HKC and providing a safe environment to do so.

ABOUT THE POSITION
This position requires someone who will own HKC’s Human Resources function, which means being a proactive, visible force ensuring that HR considerations remain at the forefront in achieving company-wide strategic and operational goals and objectives.
The HR Director will confidently work directly with our executive leadership and managers at each of our three sites to implement policies and training that serves our entire population of year-round, seasonal, and summer-only employees. With a year-round staff of 18, our roster balloons to a crew of 250 for the eight weeks of camp.
This HR Director will be involved in Talent Acquisition, Performance Management, Benefits, DEI, Training & Development, Discipline & Grievance and Employee Engagement/Culture.
OTHER KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide HR-related insights and strategy to senior management
- Recruiting and sourcing talent for seasonal positions
- Serve as the first line liaison for employee concerns and performance issues, conducting investigations and managing the progressive corrective action process.
- Payroll & benefits
- Serve as subject matter expert for all Human Resources related laws and best practices.
- Inspire a culture of celebration, appreciation, and recognition while overseeing employee engagement programming.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree required; with a Certificate or Master’s Degree in HR preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in progressively responsible HR management roles; preferably with experience in a not-for-profit environment and/or organizations with seasonal employees
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent presentation skills
- Experience in handling issues involving high levels of sensitivity, confidentiality and/or legal exposure with tact, discretion and integrity.
- Computer proficiency in all needed areas of human resources including Microsoft Office, G-Suite, and HR software (payroll, ATS, etc.)
- Ability to travel within metropolitan NY area (must be able to visit all 3 HKC sites)
- Conversational Spanish a plus
The HR Director will be expected to visit the other HKC sites weekly from Memorial Day through the last day of camp in August and one to two days a month during the off-season.
