Overview
Global Kids’ (GK) mission is to educate, activate and inspire youth to act on critical issues facing our world. Over its 33-year history, the organization has engaged thousands of young people in its innovative youth development programs that promote global awareness and action, building their agency to affect change in their community and beyond. In 2022, Global Kids expects to serve over 13,000 youth and educators in New York City and Washington, D.C. with its core-service delivery model that includes leadership development workshops, comprehensive after-school programs, and community schools. These programs foster essential skills, provide critical support and establish pathways for future youth success.
The Director of Development supports both the Executive Director’s and the Board’s fundraising activities but is also a key fundraiser responsible for expanding and diversifying the GK’s funder base. The position requires the ability to develop and implement a strategic development plan.
Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Director of Development serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Global Kids. In partnership with the ED, this position is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build Global Kids’ visibility, impact, and financial resources. The Director of Development will also design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external relationships by cultivating individual and philanthropic support.
The Director of Development will be primarily responsible for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to sustain and grow a $10M organizational budget through soliciting major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support.
The Director will expand and diversify Global Kids’ donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the Director will work closely with the board of directors and support board members as they take on a more active fundraising role.
The amount raised by Global Kids is expected to increase annually with an emphasis on unrestricted giving, as the Director of Development systematically and effectively strengthens the organization’s overall fundraising capacity.
Responsibilities
· Support and partner with the ED and board members on all major fundraising initiatives.
· Collaborate with Global Kids’ finance director to develop and implement GK’s annual budget.
· Actively work with the ED and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy, including corporate, foundation, government grants, etc.
· Identify, develop, and mentor the development team, including managing the development staff. Staff to include a grant writer, development coordinator, and major gifts/event manager.
· Have primary responsibility and oversight for the development and execution of all proposals; review all proposals with a long-term relationship-management approach
· Provide oversight and management of events.
· Oversee research funding sources and trends with the foresight to help position GK ahead of major funding changes or trends
· Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders
· Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors
· Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program
· Manage a portfolio of major donors.
Qualifications
· 7-plus years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources)
· Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time
· Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships
· Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives
· Ability to work both independently without close oversight but also as a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside of Global Kids
· Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
· High energy and passion for GK’s mission are essential
· Ability to construct, articulate, and implement the annual strategic development plan
· Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail
· A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take the initiative, and manage multiple tasks and projects at a time
· Experience in grant writing and event management are both preferred.
