The Job
LISC is seeking a manager to join its in-house legal department, which currently consists of sixteen attorneys and support staff. The department handles a diverse, interesting, and challenging workload relating to LISC’s operations, including its core lending, government contracting, and fund management businesses, that enable LISC to implement its many programs helping communities rebuild and renew.
The manager will work with department lawyers as well as with personnel from other LISC departments to manage legal department operations and to execute projects to improve processes for the delivery of legal services to other LISC departments. The manager will be focused on enabling the legal department to collaborate effectively across OneLISC and to deliver excellent legal services to the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following are an indication of the position’s core responsibilities; these are intended to illustrate the scope of responsibilities, and are not exclusive of other duties that may be required.
· Analyze and recommend improvements for workflows, which will include collaboration with other LISC departments, process coordination and refinement, and role management. Support and advance relationships with key departments across LISC with which the legal department interacts on a regular basis.
· Manage and support work assignments, together with department leadership, to ensure that each member of the department is handling a variety of assignments that meet the organization’s needs while providing opportunities for career development; proactively monitor department workload to inform staffing.
· Monitor department financial performance versus budget, including developing mechanisms and reports and analyzing data to inform decision-making.
· Manage and support, together with department leadership, LISC’s use of outside counsel.
· Coordinate recruitment and hiring of new team members, including onboarding and integration of new members into the department.
· Coordinate and develop agendas and substantive topics and presentations for department meetings.
· Organize and support the annual review process.
· Develop and manage initiatives to create a cohesive team and meaningful connections within the department.
· Contribute to the development of legal team effectiveness and provide support in achieving legal team goals.
Minimum Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required or commensurate relevant work experience.
· Minimum 3 management experience within a financial institution or a professional services firm required, including substantial project management experience, experience with legal operations preferred.
· Strong interest in the community development and impact investing fields.
· Good organizational abilities; strong work ethic; sees tasks through to completion.
· Being willing and able to cover a wide range and level of tasks – from thinking strategically to troubleshooting detail where needed.
· Creative problem solver: being able to spot issues and implement solutions.
· Comfortable working in a fast paced, high volume, fluid working environment, as well as a cooperative ‘team first’ attitude.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Fluency with office software such as MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
