Overview
Mercy Center is a comprehensive community center that has been serving women, men and their families in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx, NY for over 30 years. The NYC Asylum Seeker Service Navigation Center (“Navigation Center”) was established in September 2022 as part of the NYC emergency response to the influx of asylum-seeking migrants arriving New York City from the southern border of the United States. Mercy Center serves as a satellite office in the Bronx to the Navigation Center.
We are seeking 2 (two) Asylum Seeker Case Managers to provide direct comprehensive case management, service planning, advocacy, and referrals for newly-arrived immigrants, especially those applying for asylum. They will also help organize workshops and will be required to speak Spanish and English, be computer literate, and have experience in providing comprehensive case management.
This is a full-time, 40 hour/week position that will require flexibility in scheduling to include some evening and weekend work.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct intake and service planning for qualifying migrants, especially asylum seekers
- Provide individualized assistance to participant through identification of participant’s needs
- Develop a plan of action to assist the participant in obtaining and pursuing services that meet their needs, including but not limited to ESOL classes, workforce development, legal services, parenting skills, and registration of children to the NYC public school system.
- Prepare case write-ups and referrals to a range of social, medical, and legal services
- Coordinate applications for any public benefits for which individuals might be eligible, including but not limited to SNAP, Medicaid, employment, and housing.
- Conduct check-in sessions and case follow-up meetings with participants
- Conduct workshops on topics relevant to recently-arrived migrants
- Enter program data in database
- Participate in program meetings, case reviews and staff meetings
- Perform any other duties and responsibilities requested by the supervisor
Qualifications:
· BSW (or BA in related field) and 3 years of experience – OR – 4+ years experience in similar role
· Fluency and literacy in Spanish and English
· Case management experience required;
· Experience working with the immigrant community preferred
· Familiarity and knowledge of Latino culture and the immigrant experience preferred
· Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
· Ability to multitask and use self-initiative
· Computer literacy required, including competence in Microsoft Office and ability to navigate the internet
