Position Title: National Organizer 

Position Location: Brooklyn, NY

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a National Organizer. This is a full-time, exempt position.

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We work with nearly 50 affiliates in over 30 states and Puerto Rico to build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations that envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color. 

About the Position:

The National Organizer will organize with “Not a Game, It’s People” in addition to a broader set of Puerto Rico campaigns. The “Not a Game, It’s People” campaign is exposing the hedge funds that make their wealth by betting on a nation’s economic failure, shining a light on the people and communities these practices ravage, and proposing legislative changes in New York state. This position will create opportunities for community education, drive legislative lobbying efforts, and develop relationships with partners and coalitions. COVID depending, it is expected that the National Organizer will attend in person meetings and actions with CPD/A affiliates and partners.

We estimate that candidates will have about 6 years of relevant experience for this position, but our review of candidates for this role will focus on whether they can fill the needs of the position, not just years of experience.

The National Organizer will report to CPD/A’s National Organizing Manager. 

Primary Responsibilities 

The National Organizer will:

  • Support legislative efforts including lobbying, leading meetings with elected officials, creating documents and materials, and coordinating events.
  • Engage with stakeholders to build strong relationships and further campaign efforts.
  • Recruit and onboard new partner organizations into the campaign through 1:1’s and meaningful engagement. 
  • Support affiliates in building training and other educational resources around the legislative package and its connection to broader legislative efforts.
  • Facilitate and attend regular meetings with organizers and issue-area leads to develop campaign strategy and volunteer engagement pathways.
  • Strengthen international support in the United Kingdom and Latin America.
  • Conduct trainings, provide technical assistance and support, and create speaking engagement opportunities for coalition members. 
  • Provide support to overall Puerto Rico campaign efforts on the island and at the federal level, which includes the “Abolish La Junta” campaign and worker organizing efforts.
  • Support the Puerto Rico campaign team in the development and implementation of Puerto Rican dignity campaigns. 
  • Support overall CPD campaign efforts and identify opportunities for collaboration.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:  

  • Organizing experience on a grassroots, political, or union organizing campaign. 
  • Demonstrated experience implementing shared campaign objectives.
  • About two years of experience with political education and leadership development.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching and supporting people with very different experience levels, learning styles, and communication styles.
  • Project management experience, with multiple teams across an organization and/or community. 
  • An understanding of the political and organizational landscape of Puerto Rico and the diaspora.
  • COVID depending, the ability to travel and attend in-person meetings to achieve campaign objectives. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English proficiency is preferred, but not required, and ability to conduct outreach workshops in Spanish is a plus. 
  • A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep understanding of challenges facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, communities of color, disabled people, LGBTQ+ folks, and people at the intersections of the above communities.
