Overview

The Brearley School, an independent girls’ school serving over 770 students K-XII, seeks a Teacher of Mandarin, grades 1-4, beginning August 2023.  This one-year position may be either full-time or part-time (60-80%), depending on annual enrollment in Mandarin.

Responsibilities include:

  • teaching three to five courses in the Mandarin curriculum, as assigned, in grades 1- 4
  • participating in and/or leading planning meetings with Modern Language colleagues
  • attending to the social and emotional growth of elementary-age students
  • participating in the life of the school outside of the department 
  • supporting and advancing the School’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

The ideal candidate will:

  • have at least three years of teaching experience
  • have a strong interest in the use of technology in the classroom
  • have knowledge of and experience in working with elementary-aged students
  • have a Bachelor of Arts degree 
  • native or near-native proficiency in Mandarin and a genuine passion for teaching it
  • possess competence in inclusive, anti-bias, anti-racist pedagogy
  • commit to helping students think independently and develop confidence in their own abilities
  • possess excellent communication skills
  • collaborate eagerly, and 
  • bring to their work a collegial spirit and a positive attitude.

Salary

In 2022-23, the total salary for this position ranges from $72,200 (base salary $67,200 + flexible spending plan $5,000) to $139,250 (base salary $134,250 + flexible spending plan $5,000), depending on experience. Salary ranges are updated annually in January.
