Abraham Joshua Heschel School is seeking a full-time social studies teacher for our high school division for the 2024-25 school year.

Abraham Joshua Heschel School, located in New York City, is an independent, pluralistic Jewish Day School, N-12, unaffiliated with any single movement or synagogue. The school’s approach to education is governed by a profound respect for children and a deep commitment to academic excellence. Teachers at Heschel nurture students’ curiosity, cultivate their imagination, encourage creative expression, value their initiative, and build their critical-thinking skills. The Heschel School is dedicated to inspiring its graduates to become responsible adults and active, compassionate citizens of the Jewish world and world communities. Our ninth through eleventh grade social studies curriculum focuses on the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries, primarily in Europe, both East and West, and the United States, as well as the Middle East. The senior year offerings are single-semester electives. 

This full-time position consists of teaching four classes, with additional responsibilities and involvement in student activities and the life of the school. We seek a candidate prepared to work closely and collaboratively with other department members in teaching this independent school curriculum.

Applicants must take an interactive approach to teaching that encourages authentic communication among students. We seek candidates with at least an MA and two years of teaching experience at the high school or college level. Preference will be given to candidates who have taught students of all levels and abilities and with different learning styles. Candidates should enjoy the process of teamwork to develop curriculum and to plan special events.

The full-time equivalent salary range is $60,000 – $95,000, depending on years of experience.
