About BPI

Formed in 1999 to address the mass incarceration crisis, the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) defies expectations of who college is for and where it might lead. For twenty years, BPI has reimagined and redefined questions of availability, affordability, and expectations typically associated with college in America. One of the most rigorous and effective college-in-prison programs in the country, BPI is now extending its radical intervention in educational inequity outside of prison through the Bard Microcolleges and BardBac.

Position Description

The Director for Education Programs is responsible for developing and supporting future education leaders through an innovative and disruptive education specialization and fellowship in response to enhancing the inclusion of formerly incarcerated individuals in the field of education. This position reports to the Director of NYC Programs.

Key Duties

Curricular Specialization

  • ​​​​​​​Oversee day-to-day operations of Education Curricular Specialization
  • Develop overall educational goals, curriculum and content that is aligned with the needs of Education careers and periodically review and/or revise the curriculum and content
  • Perform and document a formal, systematic annual evaluation of the curriculum
  • Teach courses in correctional facilities as assigned
  • Recruit and retain faculty for education courses

BPI Education Fellowship

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of Education Fellowships
  • Lead fellow recruitment and selection
  • Ensure the fellowship provides an effective educational experience that leads to measurable achievement of outcomes for fellows by using data to inform actions and improvements on the cohort and individual level
  • Facilitate participation of current and past fellows in educational, career, and scholarly activities
  • Foster consistent engagement and interaction with current and prospective fellows, prospective and current faculty, and guest speakers
  • Develop and oversee operations of 10-month long intensive fellowship program for formerly incarcerated Education professionals
  • Craft and deliver content for all education-related communications internal to BPI and public facing representation of education programs, students, and alumni–including current and past Fellow

Career Advising/Professional Development

  • Development and management of Learning Commons Fellow
  • Collaborate with Reentry and Alumni Affairs and Continuing Education staff on systematic procedures to ensure alumni opportunities for Education related jobs/professional training and degree completion/advancement
  • Mentoring and cultivation of BPI alumni pursuing and employed for jobs in education
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate past/current/prospective fellow workshops, cohort-building convenings, and other capacity-building opportunities. This includes preparing meeting agendas, drafting and editing concept notes and event summary notes, and coordinating and facilitating correspondence with participants and all relevant stakeholders during workshops and meetings

Tutoring

  • Manage and supervise a team member responsible for overseeing the pedagogical training and onboarding of Learning Common Fellows and the tutoring in prison and in the microcolleges​​​​​​​

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree or higher
  • Implement a strategic plan to establish, strengthen, and maintain relationships between the institution and employers
  • Program and project management experience in a team-based structure
  • Strong communication, presentation, writing and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent technical skills including knowledge of and experience working with web-based platforms, communication and collaboration tools (e.g., GSuite and LinkedIn)
  • Ability to understand and use data in assessing and communicating outcomes

Preferred

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Experience working with justice-involved individuals, including working knowledge of academic advising, student/alumni development theories and practices
  • Some experience or degree equivalent in the Education field
  • General knowledge of the New York Education careers in the private and public sector
  • Comfortable working independently and in a fast-paced environment juggling multiple deadlines, multiple projects, and competing deadlines
  • Comfortable facilitating, leading, or teaching a seminar-style class
  • Experience with workshop and program facilitation and design, including blended learning, for advanced career development and industry-specific skills
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, with ability to represent BPI’s mission to supporters and deep understanding of BPI’s core values.

Travel Expectations

  • Weekly travel to BPI sites, as assigned, and to NYC office.
  • Occasional travel is expected to Bard College and outside of NYS with prior notification
