ABOUT THE POSITION

Brooklyn Heights Synagogue seeks an experienced Security and Operations Manager. This position has oversight of the synagogue’s daily operations and security, managing the outsourced facilities and security teams and reports to the ED. This position will allocate the security resources needed to keep the community secure and in collaboration with the Facilities Manager will direct the facilities work needed to maintain the excellent condition of the physical plant.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Security

• Supervision of all security coverage and related security measures to ensure the community’s safety, including oversight of the card access control system, observing and identifying potential safety and security risks, monitoring security camera feeds, providing support during incidents as needed, and ensuring building transition each day to overnight operations.

• Create the monthly security schedule to ensure that there is proper allocation of resources and security coverage for whenever the building is in use. 

• Ongoing coordination with the management of outsourced private security company. Day to day oversight of security guards and deploy personnel appropriately for large programs and events. Develop relationships with the 84th Precinct and ensure the appropriate additional deployment of NYPD Paid Detail.

• Train security team members on Synagogue policies and practices and work closely with the ED to ensure an effective security operation.

• Assist with implementation of new security measures. This includes working closely with contractors and architects to ensure new projects are designed and implemented as planned; oversee competitive bidding of work; the proper filing with the relevant government agencies; tracking project schedule; and monitoring budgets. 

• Keep Emergency Action Plan updated as needed and coordinate regular safety drills with staff.

Facilities

• Responsible for organizing, assigning, and supervising daily outsourced facilities operations, including oversight of set ups and maintenance, and coordinating usage of the building as needed.

• Assist with administration of the maintenance staff, as it relates to scheduling shifts and ensuring there is proper coverage of the building throughout the year. 

• In conjunction with the Facilities Manager, respond to off-hour emergencies remotely or onsite as needed.

• Serve as operations point of contact during events or programs as needed and assist the ED in maintaining collaborative working relationships with other departments.

• Working with the Facilities Manager to maintain and update proper protocols for fire safety and other emergency action measures. 

• Responsible for supplies and equipment inventory for the general office and working closely with the Facilities Manager on bulk orders of building supplies.

• Oversee maintenance/repair of certain office equipment and contact vendors as necessary, (telephone, copiers, postage machine, etc.) and manage the leases on this equipment. 

QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience working in a security and/or facilities role for 3-5 years. 

• Strong interpersonal skills and a customer service attitude. 

• Ideal candidates will be organized, motivated, high-energy, self-starters who work well within a fast-paced environment.

• Demonstrated strength as a hands-on manager who leads by example with prior experience supervising, training, and managing staff or contracted labor. 

• Proven skill in handling diverse constituencies, managing concurrent tasks, solving problems, and responding expeditiously to immediate needs and incidents calmly and professionally.

• Proficiency with the use of MS Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and other software, such as video surveillance programs.

• Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed and on an “on-call” basis.

• Knowledge of or ability to learn quickly about Jewish ritual traditions and customs, and conversational Spanish is a plus.

ABOUT BHS

Founded in 1959, the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue is a community of over 500 member units made up of families, couples, and singles from nearby neighborhoods throughout New York City. The landmark building is approximately 23,000 sq. ft., which is in operation seven days a week. We are a progressive, welcoming, inclusive community. Our educational programming includes a Preschool serving approximately 110 children, a supplemental K-12 Religious School serving over 220 students, and adult and intergenerational learning opportunities. As a founding member of NYC’s Emergency Shelter Network, BHS has hosted a homeless shelter since 1983.
