Overview

In 2020, Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) merged with Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) to create the Center for Brooklyn History (CBH). The Center for Brooklyn History’s education department connects students, educators, and archivists in New York City and beyond to our unique archives, collections, events, and experiences to bring the history of Brooklyn to life.

The Manager of Education supports a small team of educators who bring CBH’s archive to life through programs for 4th-12th grade students and their teachers. Our four primary programs are:

 

  • Brooklyn Connections, our signature residency partnership program for Brooklyn-based teachers
  • New York City History Day, the regional contest for National History Day
  • CBH’s Teen Scholars Internship
  • Professional Development workshops for educators

 

The Manager of Education is responsible for devising and tracking departmental budgets in partnership with BPL’s finance department, as well as working closely with BPL’s development team to ensure consistent funding. They are also responsible for strategic planning in collaboration with the CBH Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with CBH director and education team to establish long-range vision, annual goals, objectives, and priorities for the department
  • Serve as an advocate for the educators and work of the department within the BPL infrastructure and beyond
  • Work to operationalize already existing grant-funded education positions
  • Collaborate with educators to set and track the annual budget
  • Work with the Director, education team, and Development Department to apply for grants and establish evaluation methodology to ensure program deliverables are met
  • Encourage professional development through internal and external learning opportunities and trainings
  • Promote CBH Education’s programs through conference presentations, scholarly publications, and other industry specific networking opportunities; work with contacts at the DOE to promote programs in NYC Public Schools

Qualifications:

  • Experience administrating education teams
  • Experience teaching with object-based learning
  • Bachelor’s Degree in History, Education, Archival/Museum Studies or related field; Master’s degree in education, education administration, instructional design, or a related field preferred
  • Knowledge of pedagogical best practices, learning principles, and teaching techniques
  • Confidence researching and teaching with and about archival collections
  • Experience tracking departmental budgets
  • Experience with grant application and reporting practices
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion and the amplification of underrepresented stories and histories. An interest in Brooklyn History
  • Excellent communication and organization skills

This is a non-union, exempt position. The salary range is $80,000 – $84,000.
