About Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC:

Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC (CIS-NYC) provides essential services to immigrants in the spirit of Mother Cabrini, patron saint of immigrants and founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. CIS-NYC serves all persons residing in the five boroughs of New York City regardless of age, race, ethnicity, political views, country of origin, physical ability, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or immigration status. Position Summary:

The Community Organizer will collaborate closely with immigrant community leaders and agency staff to lead the Justice for Immigrants Program (JFI) at CIS-NYC. JFI is a community-led popular education and civic engagement initiative that exists to empower, educate, and involve immigrant families as active agents of change regardless of their immigration status. Among other tasks, the Community Organizer will be responsible for: identifying and engaging community leaders; recruiting new members; conducting outreach for and facilitating meetings and trainings; and mobilizing members for actions. The Community Organizer reports directly to the Director of Community Programs and Development.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

Membership meetings & workshops

  • Work with community leaders to coordinate and facilitate monthly bilingual educational workshops at CIS-NYC
  • Plan and oversee outreach for workshops and other JFI events
  • Design and create promotional, educational and outreach materials for JFI programs and campaigns

 

Outreach, member engagement, and base building

  • Identify and develop local leaders to get involved in organizing campaigns through one-on-ones
  • Conduct grassroots outreach in the field
  • Maintain and develop relationships with local schools, organizations, churches, businesses, etc.
  • Provide support with communications, including email blasts, website updates/posts, and social media

 

Leadership Development and Campaigns/Advocacy

  • Provide ongoing civic engagement, leadership development training, and support to existing and new immigrant leaders
  • Ensure active involvement of members in local, state and national campaigns through regular mobilization and other campaign actions/events
  • Assist with coordination of rapid response to political changes affecting immigrants
  • Stay informed about local/national politics and issues affecting the immigrant community and keep members and CIS-NYC staff up to date on relevant issues
  • Provide legislative reports at monthly MSC Immigration Commission meetings

 

Administrative and Miscellaneous

  • Maintain organizing software (NationBuilder), perform database entry, and write timely, regular reports
  • Play a supporting role in fundraising and grant-writing for JFI program
  • Provide task supervision for Community Organizing Intern(s) (under the supervision of the Director of Community Programs)
  • Oversee and coordinate JFI volunteers
  • Contribute to and collaborate with Director of Community Programs on general JFI program/project development
  • Collaborate with other programs/staff where relevant
  • Other duties/tasks as assigned

 

Education/certification, knowledge, skills and abilities required:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and immigrant rights;
  • Minimum 2 years community organizing experience;
  • Experience working on the grassroots level with a member-driven organization and a strong understanding of organizing methodologies and best practices;
  • Self-motivated and dedicated, with a proven ability to work independently under pressure;
  • Team-work oriented and ability to work collaboratively;
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills;
  • Bilingual English-Spanish required;
  • Available to work evenings and weekends when needed;
  • Computer skills, including: Word processing, databases, Excel and PowerPoint.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Masters in Social Work and interest in completing SIFI training to supervise MSW students;
  • Experience managing social media (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram);
  • Familiarity with immigration policy.
