Planner, Placekeeping

The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms by guiding justice innovators, nationally and internationally. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities.

The Brownsville Community Justice Center (“Justice Center” or BCJC) seeks to re-engineer how the justice system works in Brownsville, Brooklyn. In particular, the Justice Center is dedicated to building multiple off-ramps for young people who come into contact with the justice system by providing much-needed services to young people arrested in Brownsville. The aim is to provide the kind of support that young people need to become law-abiding members of society. The ultimate goal is to reduce crime and the use of incarceration, while at the same restoring local faith in the justice system.

The Brownsville Community Justice Center is seeking a Placekeeping Planner to support BCJC’s youth-led creative place-keeping activities with a strong focus on public safety and neighborhood revitalization. The Placekeeping Planner will assist with the planning and implementation of BCJC’s placed-based and creative place-keeping strategies. This position reports to the Program Manager of Placemaking & Workforce Development.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Identify community “hotspots” through research, asset mapping, economic health and community needs assessments, and community engagement best practices;
  • Coordinate resources and develop an action plan to increase public safety in newly identified “hotspots” as well as within Marcus Garvey Apartments and along Belmont Avenue;
  • Develop coordinated CPTED initiatives combining a mix of interest based programs (with logic models), curriculums, lesson plans, interventions, installations and civic engagement tools including resource allocation, outreach and recruitment, retention practices, and assessments; 
  • Utilize community organizing techniques to mobilize the community (youth focused) to participate in activities designed to change local norms towards violence and build community efficacy;
  • Work closely with the Justice Center’s staff and program participants to plan and execute identified civic and community benefit (place-keeping) projects;
  • Develop place-keeping assessment tools, surveys and systems for existing and future place-keeping projects;
  • Support the coordination of creative place-keeping and transformative justice activities and events;
  • Develop and assist with presentations, and reports to share with the department, local stakeholders, funders and partners.
  • Supervise assigned interns and workforce development participants. 
  • Support the department in overall strategic planning and capacity building.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with residents, tenant associations, housing management, local service providers, business owners, and program partners, including, but not limited to, law enforcement, city agencies, faith leaders, workforce development partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Supervise staff and subcontractors who support project/program planning and implementation;
  • Model and facilitate creative problem solving and youth development strategies for supervisees and subcontractors;
  • Attending community meeting and events and other partner meetings, as requested 
  • Perform administrative duties with data entry, stipend payments, and contract reporting.
  • Attend all required staff meetings and training.
  • Attend community-based events after hours, as needed. 
  • Provide all services in a culturally competent manner that is responsive to the needs of at-risk youth. 
  • Additional relevant tasks, as needed.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning OR 4 years of equivalent experience required. 
  • Strong graphic design skills and familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Familiarity with mapping software like ArcGIS
  • Familiarity with architecture and design
  • Familiarity and experience with basic carpentry
  • Ability to think outside the box to implement creative place-keeping
  • Relevant experience in one or more of the following public policy topics: community building and neighborhood revitalization, economic development, public safety, public health, and performance management.
  • Candidates must be committed to community-based work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent presentation skills and public speaking.
  • Strong team skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong administrative and computer skills for timely comprehensive tracking.
  • Familiarity with the Central Brooklyn and/or Brownsville communities preferred. 
  • Experience working with at-risk youth is preferred.

 

Position Type: Full-time, Mon-Fri, Some nights and weekends
