The Opportunity

CEO is seeking an experienced and highly organized Senior Communications Manager to join our Communications team. This is an exciting leadership opportunity to develop and implement strategic communications initiatives that advance our mission, program, values, and impact. The Senior Communications Manager is an adaptive leader responsible for CEO’s campaign, program, editorial, and digital communications. You will lead a growing team of creative and diverse communications specialists and consultants who are committed to social, economic, and racial justice. 

This role will work with CEO’s Executive, Fund Development, Policy and Program teams to execute key strategic storytelling, media, digital marketing and fund development efforts. This position reports to the Director of Communications.

CEO’s Staff Vaccination Policy

Who We Are

The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) provides employment services to people with recent criminal convictions. Across the United States, over 6,000 people participate in CEO each year, transitioning to employment that supports themselves, their families, and their communities.

What began as a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice in the 1970s to address employment barriers facing the formerly incarcerated following release in New York City has grown into the leading reentry employment organization in the country, where over 25,000 formerly incarcerated individuals have secured full-time employment since 1996. In 2016, CEO embarked on a 5-year strategic plan to grow to serve 9,000 participants annually. 

 

Who You Are

  • You have 6+ years of progressive communications management experience in the nonprofit sector 
  • You have 3+ years of experience of managing communications teams of two or more
  • Commitment to CEO’s mission and values 
  • Strong communications project management skills, preferably using tools like Salesforce, Airtable, Asana, or similar service
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing strategic communications campaigns
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging diverse audiences via email marketing, digital and social media 
  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit persuasive materials including talking points, op-eds, press releases, and messaging documents on deadline.
  • Strong people management skills that strengthens team culture and helps diverse team members to grow and feel engaged with their work
  • Ability to have fun, think creatively, inspire and work collaboratively with other amazing humans at CEO 
  • Experience working in the criminal legal system reform sector
  • Experience with Salesforce
  • Working knowledge of Content Management Systems (CMS) such as Craft or WordPress
  • Proficiency with video editing and visual content production tools, including Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Canva, and Visme or similar
  • Can juggle or perform magic tricks on zoom a plus!
  • Impeccable writing and copy editing skills
  • Strong social media and digital content creation skills
  • Individuals with lived experience within the criminal legal system are encouraged to apply

 

What You’ll Be Responsible For

Key responsibilities of the (title) include but are not limited to:

Communications Strategy

  • Support Director of Communications to create and implement a strategic communications plan aligned with the CEO’s strategic plan and values
  • Develop and execute successful strategic communications plans for key campaigns and projects, including advocacy and fundraising
  • Advise and support CEO campaign staff and program teams on communications strategies and best practices to elevate campaign and program effectiveness
  • Lead and evolve storytelling and narrative shift strategies
  • Track, evaluate, and report communications metrics to support continuous improvement and increased impact. 
  • Conduct regular communications trainings and coaching for CEO staff, interns and volunteers  

Management

  • Provide coaching, guidance, and professional development opportunities for team members, including providing resources for learning and providing day-to-day advising on project management
  • Project manage the work and performance goals of Communications Associates and consultants
  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications protocols, workflows, and work request and outcomes tracking systems
  • Manage communications calendar, story bank, and Airtable project management system
  • Create and deliver communications department presentations for funders, executive and senior managers, and other key stakeholders 

Media Relations

  • Manage media inquires, develop media protocols, and support staff and external partners in preparing for media interviews
  • Create and edit press releases, media alerts, talking points, op-eds, quotes, and other press materials for campaigns, events and program initiatives
  • Support the logistics of press conferences and press calls
  • Train and support CEO staff to serve as media spokespeople
  • Build a crisis response strategy working with the Communications Director and other key leaders

Digital and Social Media

  • Project manage CEO’s social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn, and CEO’s website
  • Work with CEO’s digital media consultant and others to increase our social media audiences, presence and digital engagement
  • Advise and support CEO staff and local site teams on digital and social media strategies and best practices, including facilitating trainings
  • Consolidate, and grow CEO’s email list and enhance our email marketing efforts
  • Lead the development and execution of digital media projects including videos and digital reports

 

Compensation and Benefits  

The salary range for this position is $80-100,000/annually CEO’s compensation philosophy considers a variety of factors including experience, internal equity, and the labor market associated with the city in which the position is located. The labor markets associated with the cities in which CEO is based are variable, and the salary range included here reflects this. Our salary offer will fall within this range and will be reflective of the labor market of the city in which the position is based, as well the other factors named above.
