Job Summary

The Senior Editor is a key member of the Editorial team within the Marketing and Communications department with responsibilities that include contributing to strategy and overseeing creation of content and messaging that advance organizational priorities. The role involves working with writers and editors from across the organization, as well as partner organizations, to craft engaging content, maintain editorial standards and stay true to the organization’s voice. The Senior Editor ensures all print and online content advances the organization’s mission and serves both external and internal audiences. 

Reporting to the Editorial Director, this is an exempt, full-time position located in our NYC headquarters. We offer competitive salary and benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to content strategy and implementation on childmind.org, social media and content partnerships. 
  • Edit and proofread organizational materials for various Child Mind Institute departments, including event and program descriptions, press releases, and promotional materials, to ensure clear and consistent brand messaging, editorial content, style and high standards.
  • Manage freelancer writers, editors and proofreaders, as needed and in collaboration with Editorial Director, to ensure uninterrupted content creation processes.
  • Edit articles and related content for childmind.org by freelance writers, staff writers, clinicians and other organizational figures. Edit pieces written by Child Mind Institute clinicians and other organizational talent for other media outlets.
  • Manage Ask an Expert questions from readers, including matching questions to be answered on childmind.org to appropriate clinicians, overseeing the production of answers, channeling requests for referrals to clinical, and communicating responses to parents asking the question. 
  • Manage content partnerships with outside organizations, serving as point person for development and/or sharing of content.
  • Develop original stories, blog posts, news items and other content for childmind.org, interviewing Child Mind Institute experts, parents and other mental health professionals for informative articles.
  • Help plan and produce weekly “New on childmind.org” email newsletter and manage in the absence of the Editorial Director.
  • Serve as liaison to social media and web production teams to ensure strategic alignment and quality of content for childmind.org and related online properties.
  • Research trends and stay abreast of salient news to keep Child Mind Institute and childmind.org relevant and responsive to current events and developments. Update articles and other content on childmind.org to reflect developments in the field.
  • Perform special projects or assignments as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism or related field.
  • At least 5 years professional experience in journalism or a related field in which writing, editing, and proofreading were the primary responsibilities. 
  • Experience copywriting/publishing/editing/proofreading for print and/or online venues. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with mental health, health or other complex issues preferred.
  • Entrepreneurial, creative and ambitious, with a love for writing and editing in service of a mission-driven organization and it audiences. 
  • Able to craft persuasive marketing copy as well as compelling web content and articles.
  • Ability to apply editing and proofreading skills in deadline-oriented environment. 
  • Passion for the CMI mission.
