Position Summary: The Children’s Aid Food and Nutrition program is a healthy food access and food education initiative for children, from early childhood through adolescence, and their families, which includes hands-on cooking, healthy and local food access, nutrition education, gardening, food justice and scratch-cooked institutional meal service. The Assistant Director of Food and Nutrition Programs is instrumental to ensuring the high quality, measurable and integrated implementation of the programs. The individual will report to the Director of Food and Nutrition Programs in the Division of Health and Wellness. They will work in partnership with Children’s Aid staff, families, internal and external partners, government entities and funders to ensure that Children’s Aid provides healthy food access and delivers impactful food and nutrition education across its sites. The Assistant Director is responsible for recruiting, hiring, and supervising full-time staff. The Assistant Director is responsible for supervising implementation of select program components to grant specifications, collecting data according to funder and evaluation plans, building and maintaining relationships with implementing sites, assisting with management of the multi-year multi-million dollar budget, coordinating staff participation in meetings and trainings. They will continue to innovate and improve program functions to make best use of funds and resources on behalf of program participants, partners, and Children’s Aid. The ideal candidate is a creative and effective program manager with considerable expertise in healthy and seasonal food access, food education, food justice, gardening and institutional meal service.
Responsibilities:
In coordination with the Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for the following:
Program Design, Management, and Integration (60%)
- Manage the implementation of SNAP-ED and adjacent Go!Healthy programs across over 10 sites, including the coordination and delivery of group- and classroom-based nutrition education classes for adults and children, fresh fruit and vegetable prescription program, community obesity prevention trainings and food box distribution programs.
- Integrate food and nutrition programs and promote collaboration
- Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective Children’s Aid partners.
- Utilize equity lens in program management; Support and elevate the team’s ability to practice culturally responsive education and to build anti-racist and inclusive practices into programing.
- Support Program Managers with determining site logistics including identifying site locations, schedules, and the purchase and delivery of all program equipment, food, materials, and supplies.
- Coordinate the development, maintenance, and implementation of site safety plans and implementation protocols, including Policies and Procedures.
Leadership and Supervision (20%)
- Recruit, hire and supervise program staff.
- Responsible for candidate recruitment, selection, and clearance process as well as ongoing compliance and performance evaluation processes per agency and funder requirements.
- Support with team building and ongoing development of a diverse, empowered, and goal-oriented team.
- Develop and facilitate trainings and coordinate professional development opportunities for program staff.
Contracts, Budgets, and Evaluation (15%)
- Serve as the Program Manager of the OTDA SNAP-Ed grant. Assist with management of SNAP-Ed portfolio program budgets, including the principal New York State OTDA five-year grant as well as public, private, corporate, and fee for service funds that also support the programs. Coordinate the implementation of and compliance of select grants and contracts.
- Effectively develops and manages program budgets.
- Implement program monitoring and evaluation activities, including the implementation of internal and external data collections systems to assure that all grant outcome measures are met
- Participate in SNAP-Ed and other funder or network meetings.
- With the support of the Program Director, write summaries and reports to document and track program success and change.
Program Operations and External Affairs (5%)
- Work with Children’s Aid Communications team to promote program through blogs, website, and other media.
- Attend required meetings and trainings.
- Manage and grow external partnerships. Participate in relevant coalitions, committees, and conferences to represent Children’s Aid, advance shared interests, and to better support program staff.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree in Nutrition; Public Health or related field is strongly preferred. Certified Registered Dietitian is a plus.
- A minimum of 2 years of program management experience with demonstrated expertise in hands-on food education, local food systems, institutional meals, nutrition education, and/or gardening. A minimum of 5 years of program management experience can substitute for a master’s degree.
- Experience with writing and teaching hands-on cooking, nutrition education, food justice, and gardening curriculum for children and adults.
- Experience and passion for increasing access to local, seasonal, and good food into urban communities. Experience with farm stand or food box distributions a major plus.
- Participatory and dynamic trainer who connects well with and engages people of diverse backgrounds and skillsets.
- Experience working on or managing federally funded grant programs preferred. Familiarity with application and reporting requirements of diverse funding streams. Specific experience with USDA or OTDA SNAP-Ed grants a major plus
- Commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace
- Understanding of food’s intersections with social justice and health equity. A demonstrated commitment to apply critical racial, gender and environmental justice lenses to food programs.
- Experience with coordinating data collection highly preferred. Experience and ability to navigate PEARS and Excel preferred.
- Spanish speaker highly preferred.
