Overview
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Development, the Development Officer is responsible for producing custom cultivation and stewardship opportunities for corporate and foundation donors to Columbia’s Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP), in collaboration with the Senior and Assistant Directors of Development and with senior CGEP leaders.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Work independently to research, identify, and strategize approaches to prospective new individual and corporate donors, in accordance with CGEP’s overall fundraising goals.
- Understand, synthesize, and then personally brief CGEP scholars and senior staff on donors’ and prospects’ energy research needs.
- Collaborate with CGEP scholars and senior staff to script, design, and produce public events and private briefings for each donor and prospect multiple times throughout the year.
- Maintain independent relationships with donors and prospects to understand their priorities and preferences.
- Use business intelligence gathered from those relationships to research, write, edit, and send persuasive, accurate, and grammatically and syntactically correct solicitations, proposals, correspondence, and other outbound development communication materials as required.
- Research, write, and edit full bios, event blurbs, and internal briefings, making case-by-case decisions about what information is most important for the senior CGEP leader receiving the briefing to know.
- Perform additional job-related duties as assigned to assist in securing funding for the Center.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required with 2-4 years of related experience. Exceptional written and oral communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Self-starter with the ability to work on multiple projects with changing priorities simultaneously. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with attention to detail.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Prior donor-facing experience in a nonprofit setting preferred. Fundraising database experience, such as Ellucian Advance or Salesforce, a plus.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to problem-solve and troubleshoot, in addition to the ability to work independently in a dynamic team environment. Demonstrated ability to effectively partner with a diverse group of scholars and senior staff.
