For more than two decades, Comprehensive Youth Development has helped to transform the lives of New York City’s young people by empowering them to create rewarding futures for themselves and their families. Comprehensive Youth Development is a nonprofit that provides a range of services to youth ages 14-24 to help them complete high school and succeed in college, advanced training and the workplace. We are seeking a Support Services Advocate for City-As-School (CAS) High School and The High School for Health Professions and Human Services (HPHS). CYD works with each student to develop a plan for life after high school.
Job Description
- This is a dynamic position that includes individual advising, group work facilitation, classroom workshops, project management, and developing strategies to continue improving our delivery of support services and broaden and our alternatives to college work.
- Develop pro-social groups including: leadership, gender, financial literacy.
- Implement community service and social emotional learning and events.
- Provide individual counseling and resource supports.
- Manage a caseload of students including alumni and assist them with planning for life after high school.
- Knowledge of college preparation and the CUNY/SUNY system for application and enrollment.
- Plan and implement alternatives to college workshops; training programs. Certification Programs, Access VR, and support benefits.
- Collaborate with Guidance Counselors, Social Workers, and Teachers regarding student information and service delivery.
- Meet with Site Director and team biweekly and provide updates, challenges, and goals.
- Track all student interactions and outcomes by complying with all data management protocols on a daily and weekly basis.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Certification in Guidance and Counseling preferred
- Demonstrated experience in providing support services to youth and career and college services (at least one year) with a desire and commitment to help students develop the best plans for life after high school.
- Knowledge of citywide support services for underserved populations.
- Basic knowledge of career exploration and development and alternatives to college.
- Understanding of CUNY/SUNY, the college admissions process and components, and financial aid systems (FAFSA, TAP, CSS, Dream Act, etc.).
- Experience in urban schools and/or community based educational organizations required.
- Strong facilitation skills in small and large group settings a must.
- The ability and desire to work with a diverse student population, including immigrant and undocumented students, ideally with a social justice lens.
- Excellent counseling skills.
- Flexible and resourceful team player – must enjoy working on a team!
- Attention to detail and proven organizational skills required.
- Must have computer proficiency in Google Suites (Drive, Slides, Forms, Sheets), and Zoom (or similar virtual platforms) – knowledge on Google Classroom.
