High School Social Worker

Overview

What is the Role?

The Social Worker will provide individual and group counseling to Coney Island Prep scholars. They will also observe and intervene with scholars in classrooms, provide disciplinary support to Deans, lead crisis interventions, and liaise with families. The Social Worker will support and educate teachers and administrators, helping them understand how developmental issues affect classroom behavior and/or educational progress. They will engage with families and community agencies to support scholars in succeeding in school, and will refer children and families to outside services as needed. The Social Worker will receive one hour of weekly clinical supervision from an outside provider and additional task supervision from school administration. 

 

What You’ll Be Asked To Do (Includes, but not limited to)

• Demonstrate a passion and dedication to Coney Island Prep’s mission and a steadfast belief that all students deserve preparation for the college of their choice
• Have comfort with and experience in the key elements of adolescent-focused assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning.
• Exhibit skills and experience in engaging, sustaining, and communicating with families.
• Have a willingness to learn is essential, with an openness to feedback from multiple invested parties including clinical supervisor, task supervisor, and school administrators.
• Have a professional demeanor, strong work ethic, detail-driven work style with excellent organizational skills.
• Have an interest and capacity for self-reflection, including a willingness to examine the areas of struggle in one’s own practice.
• Display an entrepreneurial spirit, embracing the opportunity for independence, complex decision-making, creativity and hard work inherent in a start-up.
• Have a positive high- energy attitude and drive for professional growth. 
• Provide individual and group counseling to at-risk and IEP mandated scholars.
• Utilize appropriate assessment tools, interventions, and treatment planning approaches to support scholars with respect to their social, psychological, and developmental needs.
• Respond to crises on an as-needed basis.
• Collaborate with administrators to implement restorative, developmentally informed disciplinary practices.
• Serve as a conduit between the school and families when social or emotional difficulties impede a child from learning.
• Refer students and their families to appropriate community agencies.
• Serve as consultant to school personnel regarding students or situations that are not referred for direct service.
• An understanding of how intersectionality impacts students’ lived experiences in school and at home.
• Share responsibility for grade level and school wide activities. 

What You’ll Need

• Bachelor’s degree and LCSW or LMSW required.
• Coursework and/or professional experience in clinical practice with children required. Particular consideration will be given to candidates who demonstrate knowledge of the specific developmental issues facing adolescents.
• School-based experience is a bonus; an interest in the intersection of clinical and school-based work essential.

Who are we?

Coney Island Prep is a college preparatory public charter school in Brooklyn, New York. Merging growth, performance, and commitment, the Coney Island Prep community takes its responsibility to prepare students for the college and career of their choice very seriously, but not ourselves. We balance our sense of ownership and responsibility with humility and levity and support each other every step of the way. Coney Island Prep currently serves over 1,000 scholars across its three schools, including:

 

• 290 scholars in kindergarten – second grade at the lower elementary school
• 290 scholars in third – fifth grade at the upper elementary school
• 320 scholars in sixth – eighth grades at the middle school
• 350 scholars in ninth-twelfth grade at the high school

Our Response and Responsibilities During the Pandemic

Recognizing how this pandemic disproportionally affects communities of color, we have taken steps to meet our mission in a number of ways. In addition to sharing our blueprint in approaching virtual and distanced learning, we have allocated resources for familial support, distributed hundreds of devices to sustain techquity amongst students, and provided over 100,000 meals throughout the South Brooklyn neighborhood to date. 

 

As we have navigated our return to school and broader COVID-19 recovery efforts, it is clearer than ever before that having all staff members fully vaccinated is an exceedingly important aspect of protecting the health and safety of our school community. We know that educators city-wide will continue to lead the movement for safe and healthy school communities, and we are excited to be a part of that! To adhere to New York City’s mandate, all Coney Island Prep staff members will be required to be fully vaccinated. If you are not yet vaccinated and looking to do so, we will be more than happy to provide resources to assist in that process.

 

Benefits and Compensation

• Employees at Coney Island Prep are provided with salaries that are highly competitive, set through a lens of equity, and based on an individual’s skills and experiences relevant to the role. The salary range for this role is from $80,000-$85,000.
• As a regular full-time employee of Coney Island Prep, you will be eligible for benefits that include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as a 403(b) retirement benefit package with match and Paid Family Leave.
• Staff are provided with a MacBook Air and access to all the necessary technology and resources needed to succeed.
