Position Summary 

The Deputy Director is responsible for managing the community organizers as well as specified part time staff. They must mobilize and engage with members and help to maintain participation and growth in the organization’s base through campaigns and direct actions. This position will interact directly with  grass top leaders and build coalition relationships to increase our roles in housing work/issues. When the Director of Organizing is absent or unavailable the deputy will take over leadership roles. This role still requires that they engage with volunteers and members through canvassing, phonebanking, and social media.

I’m looking for someone who: (1) has experience in issue-based advocacy or in local or state government, (2) has a holistic view/interested in working across interconnected issue areas, and (3) is adaptable, and can work both independently and collaboratively + a fast learner, and has experience in tenant union & association building.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for engagement and leadership development of our members and volunteers 
  • Must make at least 50 calls/1 on 1’s a week with a goal of 20 dues paying members for the year 
  • Develop at least 5 member leaders for actions, events, committees to take leadership roles in the organization.
  • Follow up with community organizers to make sure tasks are completed.
  • Able to fill out status reports for specific campaigns and actions  
  • Cultivate and maintain coalition relationships with the organization
  • Coordinate with partner organizations to build alignment and coalition around issues spanning multiple areas (HJ4A + RCT + FEW + CPD) 
  • Ensure engagement of members and volunteers to advance organizational policy
  • Ensure member participation and involvement in direct actions
  • Keep up energy, focus, and passion for the organizing team 
  • Report to Brayan Pagoada  (Director of Organizing) 
  • Help build out plans/strategies for housing, immigration, economic issues with the Director of Organizing. 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • High school diploma, GED equivalent required; advanced education preferred
  • Previous community organizing experience preferred
  • Belief in community organizing as a means to improve community development
  • Willingness to participate in a commitment to social justice
  • Experience working in low-income urban communities
  • Ability to serve as a credible source of knowledge and information to community members who desire to be more involved and educated on various efforts
  • Ability to work collaboratively with organizations providing technical assistance to the effort
  • Ability to utilize online organizing tools and social media
  • Ability to multitask many different activities and remain organized
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
