Overview

Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the nation, is seeking a passionate, dedicated professional to join our communications team as a Deputy Press Secretary. This role will support storytelling around Everytown’s student-focused grassroots network, Students Demand Action. The role will also support Everytown’s state legislative and ongoing advocacy efforts.

 

Primary responsibilities:

  • Supporting the awareness of the Students Demand Action brand
  • Building and managing relationships with media and serving as their primary liaison to Students Demand Action and student leaders across the country
  • Generating creative and timely story ideas and pitching them to reporters on a regular and proactive basis   
  • Supporting rapid response and both reactive and proactive media strategies around Everytown’s issue areas and advocacy
  • Conducting media trainings and preparing both student leaders and organizational spokespeople for interviews and press events
  • Supporting Everytown’s state legislative campaigns with an eye towards volunteer storytelling

Note: This role is based in Washington D.C. or New York City, with a hybrid work schedule.

 

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of communications experience, ideally including advocacy or campaign experience
  • Exceptional writing ability with the ability to create dynamic, persuasive communications materials – including press releases, talking points, op-eds, remarks, briefing materials, and more
  • The ideal candidate will have an interest in proactively building the profile of leaders, especially student leaders, in the gun violence prevention movement and pitching day-to-day stories, as well as building long-term narratives
  • Interest in politics and advocacy on a national, state, local, and grassroots level
  • Interest in working with volunteers and preparing them for media opportunities
  • Willingness to work with a growing team in a fast-paced, campaign-like environment (including sometimes unpredictable hours and crisis situations)
  • While not required, prior knowledge of gun violence prevention issues is a plus
  • Bilingual candidates, particularly those with oral and written fluency in Spanish, will be strongly considered

The annualized salary range for this position is $62,500 to $70,000. Everytown offers a generous benefits package including Medical, Dental and Vision benefits, PTO, 401K Match, Education Assistance and more.

About the Hiring Process

We are accepting applications on a rolling basis and will review them, and reach out to the candidates who meet the requirements of the position.

  • Initial Screening – Candidates that are moved into the recruitment process will be scheduled for a 30-minute virtual interview with one of the members of the hiring team.
  • Cross Departmental Interview – Candidates that advance to this step of the recruitment process, will be scheduled for a 45- to 60-minute interview with 1-3 members of the Everytown team.
  • Writing Exercise – Candidates that advance from the cross departmental interview, will be required to complete a writing assessment.
  • Department Leadership Interview – Candidates that advance to this stage will meet with the Chief Publics Affairs Officer for a 45- to 60-minute interview.
  • Organization Leadership Interview – Final candidates will meet with a member on the Executive Leadership team.
