Overview

The Research Department studies how gun violence occurs in America and identifies the best policies and interventions to prevent and address it. The Senior Research Associate will need to analyze and communicate about the various types of gun violence, how it impacts diverse communities, and the evidence-base for related policy solutions. 

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct literature reviews, quality assurance, data tracking, and original analysis to support Everytown’s advocacy campaigns and research reports
  • Draft analytically rigorous memos, policy briefs, and other work products related to gun violence prevention research for a wide range of audiences 
  • Serve as the research representative on at least one regional legislative team and support other teams’ research requests
  • Monitor, critically analyze, and communicate emerging research on gun violence prevention strategies
  • Follow notable shootings in real-time and maintain fact-sheets as they unfold
  • Interact regularly with Everytown staff across all departments to ensure effective coordination and delivery of research program activities, in keeping with the organization’s focus

Note: This is a New York City-based, full-time position with Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund Entity. 

Qualifications

  • Social Science (e.g., criminology, public health) Masters Degree, with a concentration in research methodology, and/or at 2+ years of full-time, social science research work experience
  • Demonstrated strong applied research writing skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to carefully vet public-facing materials
  • Ability to critically analyze and apply methods and results of research studies
  • Experience with learning quickly and adapting to a fast-paced, high-intensity environment
  • Excel experience required; Tableau and/or a statistics software experience is also beneficial
  • Excellent judgment and communication skills

About the Hiring Process

  • We are accepting applications on a rolling basis and will review and reach out to those who meet the position requirements.
  • Initial Interview: Candidates who move to the recruitment process will be invited to participate in a 30-minute virtual interview with the member(s) of the research team.
  • Writing assessment: Candidates who advance to the next stage will be asked to complete a brief (2 hour maximum), at-home writing assessment.
  • Team interview: Candidates who advance to the next stage will meet with two other members of the research team for a 30-45 minute in-person or virtual interview.
  • Law and Policy Interview: Candidates who advance to the next stage will meet with the Senior Vice President for Law and Policy for a 30 minute in-person or virtual interview.
  • Final Interview: Candidates who advance to the final stage will meet with Everytown’s COO or President for a 30 minute virtual or in person interview.
