Intro/ Program Description: The Baxter Safe Haven is a transitional housing residence for homeless adults, many with mental illness. Goddard Riverside Community Center is committed to building community and enhancing the lives of vulnerable New Yorkers by meeting essential human needs. With 27 programs across 22 sites, Goddard Riverside is an advocate for the interests of our community members, as well as a provider of a continuum of vital services, including food and shelter programs, assistance for homeless and mentally ill men and women, and comprehensive educational, cultural and recreational programs for adults and

children.

 

Purpose of PositionAssist tenants in the development of daily independent living skills, including assisting with laundry, personal hygiene and providing meals • Maintain attendance and monitor status of clients • Receive meal deliveries and maintain kitchen • Perform client intakes and provide an orientation of the facility at check in • Document intakes, bed swaps, attendance and incident reports via CARES. 

 

Schedule: Sunday 7:00am – 3:00pm, Monday 3:00pm -11:00pm, Tuesday 3:00pm-7:00am, Wednesday 11:00pm – 7:00am

 

Goddard Riverside and Isaacs Center follow the CDC and NYS recommendations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and are now requiring all new hires to be vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they have a qualified exemption. 

Role, Responsibilities & Essential Duties

 

  • Serve as the Senior Residential Aid and ensure all RA responsibilities are being conducted effectively and efficiently based on agency protocols
  • Perform and confirm all daily room and bed inspections are taking place
  • Assist in the monitoring and development of resident’s daily independent living skills
  • Monitor and ensure quality intake services are being provided to clients
  • Perform and/or confirm all nightly bed counts have been conducted
  • Act as a leader in conflict resolution between residents in management’s absence
  • Manage operations desk as needed
  • Monitor common areas to ensure proper usage
  • Work collaboratively with building staff to assist tenants and ensure tenant safety
  • Sign off on incident documentation in management’s absence
  • Report any concerns on quality service deliverables to management in a timely manner

 

Qualifications/ Educational Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Associates Degree preferred
  • 2 years of applicable experience in shelter or residential setting
  • Passion for working with individuals and families who are in transitional housing
  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable working with others
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, to prepare and submit all required paperwork in a timely and accurate manner Knowledge of DHS requirements and protocols
  • Ability to deal with sensitive issues with diplomacy and discretion
  • Must be able to multi task with strong organizational skills
  • Food Protection Certificate will be required
  • Driver’s License preferred
  • Bilingual is a plus

  • Prior work experience with homeless/ mentally ill individuals is helpful, but not required

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should be:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, OneDrive Excel, etc.
  • Able to use or learn multiple databases including CARES

 

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent bending, kneeling, walking, climbing and lifting to 50 lbs.

Note: 

In addition, the Agency may, in its discretion, require Residential Aides and other employees with coverage responsibility at the Baxter Safe Haven residence in Queens to stay at their posts until their relief arrives and takes over coverage, with the understanding that where, for this reason, an employee works or is going to work more than their regularly scheduled number of hours on one day of a pay period, the Agency may adjust the employee’s schedule:

(a) for the same number of hours on some other day(s) during the same work week, when possible, or

(b) at the rate of one hour less for each hour worked in excess of 35 and up to 40, and one and one-half hours less for any hour worked in excess of 40, during the second week of the pay period.

 

This position is classified as a union position under the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Goddard Riverside and the United Service Workers Union Local 74 Collective Bargaining Unit. The union represents employees in the bargaining unit (i.e. Goddard employees in Local 74 union positions). The Collective Bargaining Agreement is a written contract that defines the agreed-upon terms and conditions of employment, including wage increases, paid time off and other benefits, and the grievance process. All employees in Local 74 union positions at Goddard Riverside are subject to and covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Membership in the union includes the collection of union dues on a monthly basis, to be deducted from the member’s Goddard paycheck at a rate to be determined by the union.
