Position Summary 

Greenwich House seeks a Safety Coordinator to work at our flagship building, 27 Barrow Street, in the West Village. The building is an active hub of community and supportive programming including: Barrow Street Nursery School, the Center for Resilience and Wellness, the Youth Community Center, a future Workforce Training and Resource Center and a performing arts space.  The Safety Coordinator will work directly with our facilities staff and the receptionist to ensure that the building and sidewalk area are welcoming, safe and secure to all who enter and walk past our facility. A strong candidate will come with experience and skills in these areas, but Greenwich House will provide access to all necessary training and ongoing professional development to enable the Coordinator to be responsible for the building’s needs in first aid, safety, de-escalation, emergency notification, and working with different client populations.  

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the eyes and ears of the building, acting as the point person to report any public safety concerns to the Director of Facilities and to the local police precinct and FDNY Ladder Company as needed. 

Site Safety

  • Be the point person to report any public safety concerns to the Director of Facilities and to the local police precinct and FDNY Ladder Company as needed. 
  • While ensuring the cleanliness and site safety of the building and its perimeter, guaranteeing compliance with the building’s regulations, the Site Safety Coordinator will approach everyone in our vicinity with respect, concern and attention, reaching out for assistance when warranted.

Fire Safety

  • Responsible for routine inspections of the building fire systems such as fire alarm panel, sprinkler system, and fire extinguishers ensuring they conform to all FDNY and NYC DOB requirements.
  • Serve as the facility’s Fire and Emergency Drill Conductor, managing staff training in fire prevention; periodic fire drills and maintenance of the logs; and ensuring clear means of egress throughout the building.

Facilities and Building Operations

  • As one of the first points of contact in the building, serve as an ambassador for Greenwich House, answering questions and directing visitors as appropriate.
  • Provide shift coverage as needed for certain reception, facility and custodial functions.
  • Perform other tasks and special projects as assigned by direct supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2-4 years of experience in safety, facilities, or related field.
  • Must have or obtain a FDNY F07 Certificate of Fitness (Fire and Emergency Drill Coordination) within 90 days of hire.
  • Comfortable working with people of all ages and backgrounds with a sensitivity toward diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Must be able to recognize escalating conflict and de-escalate the situation.
  • Excellent customer service skills, oral and written communication skills, and be comfortable communicating on the phone and in-person.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish is a plus.
  • Must have a highly developed sense of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Must be able to reprioritize at a moment’s notice when an urgent issue presents.
  • Ability to perform physical labor, lifting equipment of up to 50lbs.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement:

As of October 29, 2021, we are requiring all Greenwich House and Barrow Street Nursery School new hires to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to the start date.
