GrowNYC is a 53-year-old environmental nonprofit organization – helping more than 3 million New Yorkers by providing essential services and taking action to make NYC a livable city, one where every person can enjoy a healthier, more sustainable life.  

Our Programs:  

  • Our network of Greenmarkets, Farmstands, Fresh Food Box sites and the work of Wholesale ensures that all New Yorkers have access to the freshest, healthiest local food.  
  • We blanket the five boroughs with resources like textile and food scrap collection, Stop ‘N’ Swaps, as well as free training to make waste reduction easy for all.  
  • We build and support community and school gardens through volunteer days, technical assistance, training, grants and more.  
  • We provide 70,000 children each year with programs that provide meaningful interactions with the natural environment.

SEASONAL FARMSTAND DRIVER (Part-Time): 

Position Summary

The Farmstand Driver is part of a driver team responsible for providing efficient and safe delivery of market equipment to Farmstands within the five boroughs in New York City. There is a morning shift where you pick up the van from a predetermined location and drop off equipment. There is an afternoon shift where you pick up the equipment and drop off donations before parking in a predetermined location. The Farmstand Driver position is seasonal and is part-time depending on availability of applicants and Program needs. This is a Temp to Perm position and we are looking for candidates who can start in June with the potential of extension based on performance in the role. The season begins on June 21st and runs through November 30th and winter shifts begin December 1st through June 15th.

Requirements

Seasonal Farmstand Driver Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to):

  • Pick up assigned cargo van from a predetermined location
  • Keep records of deliveries and pickups, as well as vehicle logs such as accident forms and pre-inspection checklists
  • Deliver equipment to the correct destination within a scheduled time
  • Keep the inside of the van clean, neat and organized
  • Charge scales while driving and unplugging all charging cables when not driving
  • Communicate with supervisors immediately regarding lateness and van issues
  • Communicate with supervisors immediately if any equipment needs repair or to be replaced
  • Safely operate a van on NYC roads and highways 
  • Abide by all transportation laws and maintaining a safe driving record
  • Complete additional trainings on GrowNYC vehicle policies and safe driving. 

Qualifications

  • 1+ year of truck driving experience
  • Familiarity with and driving knowledge of NYC streets and highways.
  • Familiarity with and dedication to working in diverse NYC neighborhoods 
  • Willingness to travel throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
  • Attention to detail with strong time management, organizational skills 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers
  • Creative problem-solver, able to troubleshoot and make quick, often on-the spot decisions
  • Ability to work early mornings and weekends
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License for at least one year, with satisfactory driving record (DMV record will be solicited)

Ideal Qualifications

  • Previous work experience in delivering equipment
  • Experienced CDL driver 
  • Familiarity with using Slack and email for communication
  • Familiarity with Google Suite (GMail, and Google Drive)

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs and work in noisy environments. This position requires the ability to make deliveries in all weather conditions. 

Schedule

Morning routes can start and end between 6AM-9AM in the morning and afternoon routes can start and end between 1pm-4pm, Wednesdays through Saturdays. Each route can last up to 4 hours and include holidays. This is a Temp to Perm position and we are looking for candidates who can start in June with the potential of extension based on performance in the role. The season begins on June 21st and runs through November 30th and winter shifts begin December 1st through June 15th.

Compensation

The position is a non-exempt, part-time, variable hourly position. It pays $25- $26 per hour and includes only statutory benefits. 

Location

Morning drivers are responsible for picking up the van in the morning from a predetermined location posted in Slack. Afternoon drivers are responsible for picking up the van at a Farmstand, packing up the equipment, dropping off donated produce to a predetermined site and then parking the van and posting the location in Slack. The driver’s routes service all five boroughs, mainly Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens.
