The Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF) is a comprehensive supplemental education and youth development organization that works to help motivated students develop the intellectual curiosity, academic ability, social values, and personal resilience they need to ensure success in school, career, and life. HEAF identifies scholars in middle school and supports them until they graduate from a four-year college through a variety of after-school, Saturday, and summer educational and youth development programs.

Job Description

Program: Exploring STEAM Together: A Multigenerational Journey Through Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math

Duration: 4 Weeks (July 7th – August 1st, 2025)

Hours: 35 hours per week

Compensation: $50 per hour

Location: Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF) & Field Trip Sites

Position Overview:

HEAF is seeking a dynamic Summer Quest Lead Instructor with expertise in middle school education, culturally responsive pedagogy, and Math instruction. This role will lead and facilitate the 4-week STEAM curriculum, working closely with students, families, and interns to create an engaging and empowering summer learning experience.

The Lead Instructor is responsible for delivering daily lessons, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment, and guiding interns and co-facilitators in supporting student success. This position is ideal for an experienced educator, teaching artist, or youth development professional with a strong foundation in math, STEAM education, and student engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Instruction & Student Engagement (60%)

  • Lead daily STEAM lessons, ensuring content is engaging, inquiry-based, and hands-on.
  • Facilitate student-centered learning experiences that build confidence in Math and problem-solving.
  • Adapt instruction to meet varied learning styles and abilities of students.
  • Foster a culturally responsive classroom that affirms students’ identities and lived experiences.

Classroom Leadership & Team Support (25%)

  • Serve as the lead facilitator guiding interns and the co-facilitator in supporting students.
  • Provide necessary coaching to interns, helping them develop instructional skills.
  • Maintain a positive classroom culture, ensuring high engagement and respect.
  • Manage classroom logistics, ensuring smooth lesson execution and transitions.

Family & Community Engagement (15%)

  • Serve as classroom lead when students go on their weekly field trips, ensuring their safety and engagement.
  • Serve as a liaison between students, families, and staff to foster communication and support.
  • Support the Community Wellness team’s family learning workshops, ensuring parents feel empowered to support their children’s STEAM education and learning.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education, Math, STEM, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience teaching middle school students, preferably in Math or STEAM.
  • Strong background in culturally responsive teaching, inquiry-based learning, and youth development.
  • Experience working with students of color and historically marginalized communities.
  • Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.
  • Ability to mentor and lead a team of interns and co-facilitators.
  • Passion for making Math accessible and empowering for middle school students.

Tentative Schedule Overview

    • Week 1 (July 1st – July 3rd) – Training & Prep:Program orientation, classroom logistics, curriculum review, family engagement strategies.
    • Weeks 2-5 (July 7th – August 1st) – Program Implementation:Monday – Thursday (9:30 AM – 4:30 PM); Fridays dedicated to field trips and student/family engagement.
      • (August 1st) – Wrap-Up & Celebration: Program reflections, student assessments, culminating event.
