Under the supervision of the Director of Operations, the Cook is responsible for providing meals for Children and Staff. Maintenance of equipment, inventory, menu planning, food preparation, cooking and service for congregate meals and special food requests for participants. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or equivalent. Must have a valid food handler’s certificate and two years’ experience as a cook or two years working in food service. Must be computer literate, including proficiency in Microsoft Office. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of Early Childhood Education, Universal Pre-K, and Head Start. Bilingual Spanish a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assist in preparing, cooking, controlling portions and serving of food
  • Assist in maintaining proper temperature control of prepared food
  • Assist in daily congregate meal service and preparation of special food requests for programming
  • Responsible for directing packing and clean-up of off-site meals
  • Responsible for cleaning of food prep areas, utensils and equipment after service is completed
  • Assist in recording daily food costs, daily food used charts and food/equipment temperatures at least once per month, take end-of-route temperatures of homebound meals
  • Assist in taking and recording monthly inventory
  • Maintain food cost control through careful purchasing, record keeping and inventory control
  • Keep up-to-date daily and monthly food cost records
  • Assist in receiving, weighing and storage of food
  • Assist in safeguarding food supplies and kitchen equipment
  • Maintain sanitary standards for food services areas, including kitchen, storage areas, dining room and refrigerators/freezer
  • Solicit ideas from participants and staff in developing the program’s community building efforts/activities
  • Perform all functions of the Managing Chef in his/her absence
  • Must be available to work on either Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, to be decided in consultation with the Managing Chef, as well as other holidays and special events, as necessary
  • Performs other duties as assigned
