GENERAL DUTIES

Performs highly-skilled laboratory functions and other technical duties in support of coursework.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Hunter College is seeking a College Laboratory Technician (CLT), (a 12-month appointment) in the Nutrition and Public Health Department in the School of Health Professions. The CLT member should be knowledgeable in the area of Food Science, Nutritional Biochemistry, Nutrition Assessment, and Sports Nutrition. The CLT will be part of Hunter College’s 125+ year old tradition in Nutrition and Food Science education and training and will share responsibility for other related department functions.

The CLT reports to the Chair of the Nutrition and Public Health Department/ Dean of the School of Health Professions with limited supervision, performs laboratory procedures requiring technical skills and independent judgment in food science (sensory and objective analysis), nutritional biochemistry, nutrition assessment and body composition, nutrition focused physical exams, and sports nutrition.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Preparation of materials for use in the following Laboratories: Nutrition, Food Science/Chemistry, Nutrition Assessment, and Sports Nutrition
  • Maintenance of analytical and general laboratory equipment, chemical and general storage areas
  • Maintenance of supplies inventory and orders for new materials
  • Supervision of students in instructional setting
  • Performance of related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of four years’ related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor’s degree may be substituted for four years experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

A master’s degree in an area appropriate to the duties to be performed. Applicants should be knowledgeable of the principles and analytical methods in food science, nutritional biochemistry, nutrition assessment, and sports nutrition, as well as appropriate laboratory instrumentation. Proficiency in basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR, micro pipetting, buffer preparation, and standard laboratory procedures is strongly preferred.

COMPENSATION

Salary commensurate with education and experience, $61,871 – $74,165.
