Merkin Hall, the Center’s intimate performance venue, provides unparalleled access to today’s most compelling artists, workshops, and competitions, offering students, artists and audiences alike the chance to share music at the highest level. Its acclaimed Artist-in-Residence program also gives those performers the resources to develop groundbreaking, multidisciplinary projects as well as educational opportunities to mentor and inspire. Kaufman Music Center continuously cultivates and nurtures new generations of artists through Special Music School, New York’s only K-12 public school prioritizing an intensive, immersive, and musically focused education without financial barriers, as well as Lucy Moses School, Manhattan’s largest community performing arts school for students of all ages. 

 

Kaufman Music Center seeks a part-time Music Program Associate for Special Music High School (SMS HS), reporting to the High School Dean of Music.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the main administrative functions of the program including scheduling, correspondence, answering phones, data entry, database management
  • Support the production of rehearsals, concerts, student performances, juries, etc. including permitting space, ensemble set-up/strike.
  • Assisting in all aspects of the admissions process, including auditions and all communications with faculty and prospective students
  • Serving as the initial contact with families, faculty, and outside parties regarding school events, schedules, and requirements
  • Managing attendance for all music program courses, classes and rehearsals.
  • Facilitating communication among various constituents, including faculty, guest artists and Artists-In-Residence
  • Scheduling and maintaining database of classroom/studio usage
  • Helping with instrument maintenance, care, storage and inventor
  • Supporting the maintenance of the calendar for the high school music program: providing calendar/event information to Kaufman Music Center staff and faculty, students, families, the NYC Department of Education, and the Special Music School Parent Teacher Association
  • Assisting with production of Music Department Newsletter
  • Liaising with students, faculty and staff to organize music program documents, including performance request forms, jury forms, concert programs, grade collection, assessments, etc. 
  • Assisting in the purchasing of supplies and instruments
  • Supporting the Special Music School Director and High School Dean as needed.

 

Requirements

  • Music background is required, experience in arts and/or education environments preferred
  •  Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Google Suite, working with databases
  •  Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, and outstanding telephone etiquette
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
  • Organized and methodical with excellent attention to detail,
  • Music software knowledge and/or experience in concert production is preferred. 

 

The position is part-time, approximately 25 hours per week, in person
