Overview

Summary:     

The Bronx-Westchester (BW) Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is a non-profit organization committed to increasing the numbers of underrepresented health care providers serving medically underserved communities.

Its primary objectives are to:

  • Develop Relationships/Collaborations with community-based organizations, health professions schools, and health care providers serving medically underserved communities to address health care disparities through workforce development.
  • Provide youth and young adults with opportunities for exposure to the variety of health professions through internship placements, clinical rotations, mentoring, and ongoing support.
  • Enhance cultural competency of future and current health professionals working in medically underserved areas.
  • Develop and implement projects and activities to address health disparities in the Bronx and Westchester communities, most in need.

The Program Director ensures that BW AHEC health career and internship programs, as well as activities funded by BW AHEC grants, are implemented, monitored and evaluated. The Program Director is responsible for the delivery of health career education programs, student internships, and health professions student placements, with a focus on establishing partner relationships while developing site placements. The Program Director is also responsible for conducting outreach and student recruitment activities.

This position requires travel throughout the Bronx and Westchester’s medically underserved communities.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Program/Curriculum development
  • Manage day-to-day program and administrative activities
  • Conduct extensive community outreach to high schools, community colleges, other academic institutions and CBOs to inform them about AHEC programs
  • Prepare and deliver program presentations for community boards, CBO’s, health care providers and legislators
  • Establish and maintain relationships with internship partners
  • Recruit high school, college, and health profession students
  • Visit and monitor placement and program sites
  • Maintain required reporting data in the NYS AHEC Tracking system
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local elected leaders to advocate for continued funding
  • Maintain receipts/records for accounts payable and receivable
  • Maintain organization website
  • Prepare correspondence and other documents as needed
  • Attend meetings as required (upstate and national)
  • Respond to student inquiries
  • Track student placements
  • Assist Executive Director and management team with the preparation of program reports, budgets, funding requests and proposals

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Masters degree, MPH/MPA preferred; BA/BS degree or equivalent required, preferably with community health, public health or education concentration.

EXPERIENCES AND/OR SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience required
  • Including program/curriculum development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health care disparity issues strongly preferred
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated familiarity with community health, youth service programs, student internship programs
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaborative mindset
  • Goal oriented with strong ability to prioritize, multi-task and problem-solve
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish, highly desirable
  • Proficient with the use of computers and common web-based software applications and platforms, including but not limited to Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, etc.
