Met Council is America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. Met Council’s ten different departments are staffed by experts who helped over 305,000 clients in 2021 and continuously advocate on behalf of all needy New Yorkers. Our holistic programs include 100% affordable housing at 20 locations, our award-winning family violence program, comprehensive Holocaust survivor assistance, senior programming, crisis intervention, and the largest free kosher food distribution program in the world. Our network of food pantries, affordable housing sites, and JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York.
Position Summary:
In 2021 Met Council opened the Boro Park Chesed Center, a welcoming environment for delivering a wide array of social services, emergency food assistance, and workforce development programs in one centralized location convenient to the Jewish communities in Brooklyn with high demand for these services. In early 2024 we will move from this pilot location to the Upward New York Brooklyn Hub, also in Boro Park, which will significantly increase our physical capacity to scale services.
The Workforce Program Developer will drive program planning and partnership building for Met Council’s nascent workforce development portfolio in Boro Park, Brooklyn. This will be accomplished in collaboration with the Managing Director of Social Services, the Executive Director of the Chesed Center, current program staff & participants, Brooklyn community members, and funders. The Workforce Program Developer will be a thinker and doer with experience in building or planning new programs and/or operating workforce development programming. This role is an exciting opportunity to make positive change in Brooklyn through innovation, partnership building, and strategic thinking.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Ideate and execute a plan to build Met Council’s workforce development suite of programs, in conjunction with current pilot programming, staff, program participants, funders, and partner agencies.
- Represent Met Council to external partners.
- Build relationships with community members and groups within the Boro Park & Bensonhurst communities. Assess demand and gather further input from community on workforce development needs.
- Build relationships with other workforce development & job training organizations in New York City.
- Build Met Council’s relationships with potential employers, government & philanthropic players in the field (e.g. NYC EDC).
- Report on progress achieved, lessons learned, and future steps to Met Council leadership, funders, and other parties as needed.
- Work internally with Met Council staff on data collection and analysis needs, evaluation plans, and pilot programming.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Competencies:
- Experience in designing and planning new programs for a non-profit agency.
- Partnership building with organizations, potential employers, community groups, and religious institutions.
- Knowledgeable of workforce development field, its best practices, and key institutional players.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strategic thinker who can put ideas into practice.
- Able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others both internally and externally to achieve the goals of the organization.
- Able to manage schedule, priorities, and resources to achieve goals.
Skill and Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
- 5+ years work experience in nonprofit, community-based, program planning, or workforce development industries required.
- Good communications skills are necessary; must be fluent in English (both written and verbal).
- Bilingual English/Yiddish (preferred). Familiarity with Boro Park community (preferred).
Physical Demands:
- Required Constantly: Walking, sitting, grasping, bending, stooping, squatting, computer input, finger dexterity and coordination of hand, eye and foot.
- Required Frequently: Standing and climbing stairs; carrying laptop & files (approx. 8-10 lbs).
- Required Occasionally: Reaching above the shoulder, and lifting 5-25 pounds, pushing and pulling.
