Overview

JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Executive Director (AED) is responsible for building a strong team, fostering a dynamic organizational culture and strengthening our programs and impact in our community. The Associate Executive Director will embody and lead New Settlement in the execution of its mission and vision, while upholding the organization’s values. As a senior leadership team member, the Associate Executive Director is a key liaison between Programs, Operations, Human Resources, and Development. Direct reports include five Division Directors and a Data Manager. This position interacts with all internal departments, leading all program-focused activities, and provides vision and strategy around future organizational needs, while strengthening staff capacity and organizational culture. In absence of the ED (i.e. vacations, business events, etc.) the AED serves as the main point of contact for organizational matters.

Job Duties include but not limited to: The Associate Executive Director assumes the following responsibilities under the direction of the Executive Director and in collaboration with other members of the leadership team and their staff. 

Vision & Strategy  

• Inspiring Leadership. In collaboration with the Executive Director and leadership team, play a key role in the overall development, strategic planning, service delivery, and management of the organization.  

• Strategic Vision. Provide vision and motivation, assisting in the implementation of the strategic plan. Provide strategy and assistance around the budgeting for future programming, staffing, training, space, infrastructure and system needs that will help the organization more effectively carry out its mission with a focus on continual quality improvement. 

Program Oversight  

• Program Operations. Oversee the coordination, integration, and delivery of all programs, contracts and related services, promoting collaborative relationships between program areas and ensuring that the expectations of members/participants, funders, partners, constituents, and other stakeholders are consistently met. 

• Policies & Practice. Implement practices and develop new policies that develop an inclusive, equitable team-based environment to motivate and inspire staff to work collaboratively toward New Settlement’s mission and vision.  

Staff Development 

• Staff Growth. Oversee recruitment, on-boarding, selection, hiring and training for organization including drafting and updating job descriptions, conducting interviews, hiring and training.  

• Staff Supervision. Directly supervise six major program areas; working closely with senior program staff to build their skills and confidence so that they can engage, encourage, and motivate all staff. Coach and guide senior program staff on how to troubleshoot program and staff performance challenges.  

• Professional Development. Foster a working environment that is learning and growing together. In partnership with the Human Resources department, provide training and staff development opportunities for all staff, building a supportive environment that promotes staff well-being and enhancing the staff’s professional capabilities through training and coaching.  

• Staff Performance Evaluation. In collaboration with the Human Resources department, conduct regular staff evaluations, strengthening the current structure and process, ensuring a smooth, intentional and proactive evaluation process. Oversee the process of conflict resolution within the organization as needed to build a cohesive, relationship-driven work environment.  

• Team Recognition. Lead efforts to celebrate successes within the organization for our programs and staff – including program successes, milestones, anniversaries, and birthdays. 

Data and Evaluation 

• Program Impact & Evaluation. Work with the senior leadership team and program teams to establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to assess program effectiveness, regularly evaluating and adjusting programs to optimize outcomes and analyzing results to inform decision-making. Ensure the delivery of qualitative and quantitative goals and outcomes of programs. 

• Database Development. Contribute to the ongoing development of New Settlement’s Salesforce database used to track program outputs and outcomes. Work closely with senior leadership team to ensure successful adoption of database by program teams. 

Fiscal Management & Fundraising 

• Fiscal Management. Work closely with the Operations department to develop program budgets and monitor programmatic operations to ensure sound fiscal and systems management. 

• Fundraising. Support development efforts through the promotion and execution of New Settlement’s fundraising events, program grant development and partnering with the Executive Director to steward funding/external relationships. 

External Relations  

• Partnership Development. Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization including youth, families, community partners, school principals, volunteers, funders, elected officials, and the Board. 

• Government Relations. Maintain the lead agency representative for all government contracts including the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), the Department of Labor (DOL), Empire, 21st Century and others.  

• Represent New Settlement on coalitions, at events, community gatherings, conferences, and forums to promote its mission and activities.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: 

• At least eight years’ leadership experience in a nonprofit, government, or philanthropy, overseeing multiple programs or contracts ideally serving diverse, low-income youth or communities. 

• At least 5 years of demonstrated experience managing and leading a high-performing diverse team in a multi-site structure to build a positive team culture, as well as supervising and coaching team members to exceed their goals and develop professionally. 

• Experience building relationships and coalitions with other organizations across sectors. 

• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, can represent the organization externally across many stakeholders and constituencies.  

• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and create an inclusive environment. 

• Demonstrated commitment to youth development, gender equity, social justice, cultural issues, and community engagement as strategies for social change.

Employment is at will and employees will undergo 45- and 90-day check-ins during their 90-day probationary period.
