Title:          Maintenance Assistant

Program Description:

Geffner House is a 307-unit supportive Single Room Occupancy (SRO) building that provides permanent housing for low-income men and women, including people with serious and persistent mental illness; individuals who are recovering from drug or alcohol addiction; and people who are living with HIV/AIDS. Tenants are offered a comprehensive array of services. 

Overall Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Building Manager and the Assistant Building Manager, the Maintenance Assistant performs maintenance work to provide a clean and safe environment for the tenants and staff in the building; performs related work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The essential duties of the Maintenance Assistant include but are not limited to the following activities:

  • Completes written and verbal requests for work from supervisory staff in a timely manner.
  • Performs carpentry work including sheet rocking, plastering, taping, and painting of designated areas in apartments and other areas of the building.
  • Prepares units for move-ins.
  • Performs minor plumbing assignments in tenant’s apartments and could assist plumbers in completing plumbing work.
  • Performs other work in tenants’ apartment such as installing and/or fixing blinds, fixing and replacing tiles, doing minor window repairs, replacing light fixtures and light bulbs, hanging doors and fixing door locks.
  • Assists in accepting deliveries and in maintaining the inventory levels for materials and supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisory staff.                             

Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma or GED.  
  • Must have a Citywide Fire Guard Certificate and a P99.
  • One year of experience doing building repair and custodial work.
  • Required to walk throughout the building to perform requested work and to stand, sit, bend, and crawl into tight spaces to complete the work. 
  • Must be able to climb as well as work from ladders ranging from 6 ft. to 12 ft. and must be able to lift or move packages, as well as furniture and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
