ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor, Community Food & Nutrition Programs and the Community Food Retail Manager, the Food Program Associate will support the day-to-day operations of the RiseBoro Food Pantry and RiseBoro Farmers Markets, and our farm share program, Cosecha, upon its re-launch in 2024This role will provide on-site support for the food pantry and the farmers’ markets, in addition to administrative support with record keeping, data collection, and marketing. The Community Food Program Associate will be actively engaged in client, customer, and vendor relationship-building and other community-facing work. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

RiseBoro Food Pantry

  • Provide critical support in the day-to-day operations of the pantry
  • Unload, stock, organize, and inventory produce and dry goods
  • Assist in the packing and distribution of produce for clients
  • Coordinate the food pantry in the absence of the Supervisor, Community Food & Nutrition Programs
  • Ensure the refrigerators and shelves, are kept clean and properly organized
  • Inspect donations and purchases for expiration dates, freshness, and satisfactory condition
  • Support with processing invoices and ordering food

RiseBoro Farmers Markets

  • Load and transport market inventory, set up and break down tents/tables, sell locally made goods, and support vendors as needed
  • Support with SNAP/EBT transactions, token distribution, and card/cash purchases
  • Assist with organizing and executing outreach events and marketing campaigns
  • Train and supervise volunteers and youth market staff
  • Support social media strategy and implementation

As of 2024: Cosecha

  • Transport Cosecha bags to the designated pick-up site on distribution day; set up and break down distribution space
  • Process SNAP/EBT, cash, and card transactions; distribute shares and manage upcoming orders
  • Implement survey distribution and data collection

Planning and Administration

  • Assist with evaluating program efficacy and support with annual planning Transport
  • Participate in staff meetings
  • Assist in managing inventory of the produce and materials for the pantry
  • Assist with cooking demonstrations i.e., preparing printed materials, sending produce lists, offering program updates, etc.
  • Collect and organize client data

COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Must possess strong communication skills with the ability to speak comfortably and courteously to a diverse population, while maintaining a professional and warm demeanor
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and customer service skills
  • Conversational English/Spanish speaker required; Mandarin/Cantonese speaker is a plus
  • Familiarity with Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY area preferred
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions required
  • Valid drivers license preferred, or must be willing to obtain a license within 90 days of employment; commercial driver’s license a plus
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to stand for extended periods i.e., 6-8 hours
  • Ability to work outdoors in all climates, excluding severe weather)
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule; early morning and weekend schedule availability as required
  • Experience processing cash, SNAP/EBT, and/or credit card transactions preferred

  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and/or Google equivalents
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality, particularly with client information
  • Ability to understand the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting communities that have experienced systemic oppression and bias (i.e., people of color, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, justice-involved persons, etc.)

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • A minimum of one (1) year of customer service or community engagement work experience preferred
  • NYC Food Protection Certificate a plus
