Overview
Summary:
Case Managers provide comprehensive services to individual clients and families impacted by violence (domestic violence, rape, sexual assault, and homicide). Services provided by case managers include safety assessment, case planning, case facilitation and risk management, referrals, information workshops and support groups. The Case Manager coordinates with Safe Horizon supporting programs and local agencies to provide short- and long-term care necessary to meet the needs related to victims of violence.
Essential Job Functions:
- Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients.
- Provides intake and assessment for individuals seeking assistance.
- Provides short-term crisis intervention to victims and survivors of crime with special emphasis on working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and homicide.
- Engages in risk assessment and safety planning.
- Provides court orientation, criminal justice advocacy, accompaniment, and support.
- Provides information and referrals for other Safe Horizon services such as shelters and long-term counseling.
- Provides information regarding public assistance and other entitlements, and assistance with OVS applications.
- Provides emergency assistance including transportation, food vouchers, financial assistance, emergency cell phones, and lock replacement.
- Advocates on behalf of clients with the District Attorney’s office, Court personnel, NYPD, NYCHA and other subsidized housing, employers, schools, and other social service agencies.
- Provides updates and assists clients in reporting any continued harassment and other violations.
- Performs data entry into a computerized record keeping system.
- Maintains cooperative working relationships with other service providers.
- Facilitate community outreach presentations and trainings.
- Co-facilitate supports groups offered to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and homicide.
Secondary Job Functions:
- Maintains routine administrative responsibilities to include preparation of correspondence, maintenance of files, mail, e-mail and telephones.
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Interacts with:
- New York State Office of Victim Services
- District Attorney’s office
- Criminal Court and Family Court personnel (court clerks, court officers, etc.)
- NYPD
- NYCHA and DHS
- New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner
- Local social service providers
- All internal Safe Horizon programs and departments
- All other external agencies and organizations that provide appropriate services to the client
Knowledge and Required Skills:
- Sensitivity towards and understanding of victimization, especially the experience of survivors of domestic violence.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills be assertive and well organized.
- Ability to work under pressure in a calm and reassuring manner.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred
- Basic understanding of computers and systems for managing case records
Education:
Required:
- BA or BS Degree or equivalent relevant experience
Experience:
Required:
- One year of experience working in a social service setting or with victims of domestic violence
Desirable:
- Related work or intern experience within the criminal justice system. Knowledge of effects of victimization and trauma on victims. Knowledge of community resources and options available to victims of crime and abuse.
