Summary: 

Safe Horizon is the nation’s largest victims’ assistance organization. The Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) is a joint program of Safe Horizon and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) that has assigned advocates to every police precinct and Police Service Area (PSA) citywide. Safe Horizon’s Crime Victim Assistance Program works in collaboration with the New York City Police Department, community based organizations, the District Attorney’s Office, Criminal/Family/Supreme Courts, and other agencies in order to provide comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence and general crimes. The Special Victims Division (SVD) will expand the role of CVAP to include work with skilled and trained SVD Advocates to respond to teen and adult survivors of rape and sexual assault.

Essential Job Functions:

The Safe Horizon CVAP SVD Manager will provide supervision for the CVAP SVD Senior Advocates in their work within NYPD SVD.  This position will develop relationships with detectives and personnel within the SVD. This position will meet with SVD on a regular basis to ensure seamless collaboration between the SVD, community partners, and the CVAP SVD so that teen and adult clients of sexual assault are provided with a coordinated, victim-centered approach to reduce trauma and improve the quality of services victims receive. This position will support the SVD Senior Advocate’s work with victims, friends, caregivers and family members of sexual assault who are seeking assistance from NYPD within the SVD.

The CVAP SVD Manager’s responsibilities may include some or all of the following:

·        Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients. Coach and guide staff in their client practice that reflects these approaches.

·        Provide quality supervision and developmental support for SVD Senior Advocates;

·        Assist with hiring of SVD Senior Advocates to work in SVD;

·        Participate in New York State 40-hour certification training for advocates who provide support for sexual assault victims;

·        Coordinate training of CVAP Senior Advocates to ensure that they have the necessary skills and knowledge to work with victims of sexual assault;

·        Help expand CVAP into the NYPD SVD and work closely with detectives & supervisors to foster and maintain relationships;

·        Communicate with Supervisor regarding personnel and administrative issues that arise in the SVD;

·        Provide ongoing and regular individual and group supervision to address cases, professional development, vicarious trauma and self-care;

·        Conduct observations of Senior Advocates’ work with victims and provide relevant feedback;

·        Provide support to Senior Advocates as they intervene in difficult cases;

·        Assist Senior Advocates in building collaborations with local community-based organizations and hospitals who provide support for victims of sexual assault;

·        Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with SVD supervisors;

·        Hold monthly meetings with CVAP Senior Advocates and SVD personnel; 

·        Participate in cross-training or other educational opportunities with NYPD relevant to investigation, victim advocacy, and service provision;

·        Conduct community presentations, as well as presentations about the unique work of the CVAP SVD at conferences;

·        Participate in the development of policies and procedures;

·        Represent the CVAP SVD to outside agencies and at public forums;

·        Prepare various reports and statistical data;

·        Complete other tasks as assigned by supervisor;

·        Attend relevant training, workshops and seminars, including sexual assault related task force meetings to ensure strong partnerships with local community-based organizations;

·        Represent the Program in media and press inquiries

Knowledge and Skills:

·        Strong verbal and written skills;

·        Excellent interpersonal skills, be assertive and well organized.

·        Demonstrate the ability to work independently and within a precinct setting.

·        Prior knowledge or experience working with victims of sexual assault helpful.

Qualifications:

·       A minimum of two years’ experience in crime victim service delivery; one year as an advocate in the Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) meets this requirement.

·        A minimum of two years of management experience helpful

·        Knowledge of the police and criminal justice system helpful

·        Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field or equivalent training and experience

Other: Full Time Hours: Noon – 8:00pm with flexibility of work schedule preferred, 35 hours/week;
