Summary:   

The Family Justice Centers (FJCs) are an initiative of the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender Based Violence to reduce barriers faced by domestic violence victims who are seeking help. Safe Horizon is co-located at the FJCs and partners with the Mayor’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office and other civil legal and community-based organizations to provide a safe and welcoming place for victims to receive various services. Safe Horizon staff at the FJC provides crisis intervention, case management services, advocacy, information and referrals, and practical assistance to survivors, providing client-centered safety assessments and risk management plans. 

The 60% Senior Case Manager will rotate their days among the Brooklyn and Queens locations on Mondays and Tuesdays in Queens and Thursdays in Brooklyn. This schedule is subject to change based on program need.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into work with clients; 
  • Provide case services and crisis intervention to victims of domestic violence; 
  • Provide assistance in navigating the family court and criminal justice systems; 
  • Conduct client-centered safety assessments and help clients prepare risk management plans;   
  • Provide court orientation, criminal justice advocacy, and support; 
  • Collaborate with the DA’s Office and other on-site partners to ensure services are streamlined; 
  • Provide emergency practical assistance including transportation, food vouchers, and referrals for financial assistance and lock replacement; 
  • Provide information and referrals for services such as shelter, long-term counseling, public assistance and other entitlements, and assistance with OVS applications; 
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with the district attorney’s office, family and criminal court personnel, NYPD, NYCHA and other subsidized housing, employers, schools and other social service agencies; 
  • Provide technical assistance, consultation and opportunities for training new case managers and volunteers;  
  • Provide back-up coverage to front line staff as needed; 
  • Participate in staff meetings, community meetings and relevant trainings and seminars; 
  • Perform data entry into computerized record keeping systems; and 
  • Various other duties to be determined by supervisor.  

Secondary Job Functions:

  • Assist with the administration of direct services;

Knowledge and Skills:

Required:  

  • Sensitivity towards and understanding of victimization, especially the experience of survivors of domestic violence; 
  • Strong communication and organizational skills;  
  • Ability to work under pressure in a calm and reassuring manner; and 
  • Ability to generate one’s own tasks and develop creative solutions to problems.  

Education: 

Required:  

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience    

Experience: 

Desirable: 

  • Experience working with survivors of domestic violence;  
  • Experience with the criminal or civil justice system; 
  • Bilingual in Spanish strongly preferred
