Sanctuary for Families is New York’s leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 11 locations throughout New York City.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Staff Attorney is a key position within Sanctuary for Families’ Anti-Trafficking Initiative (ATI), which represents foreign and US born survivors of human trafficking in a wide variety of legal matters each year. The Staff Attorney provides in-house legal representation of immigrant survivors of human trafficking in immigration, criminal justice advocacy, victim rights, and criminal vacatur cases. The Staff Attorney may also mentor and/or supervise volunteer and pro bono attorneys, law students, and other legal interns. In addition to legal services, the Staff Attorney will also engage in client specific advocacy, family reunification, and case management services. Other important responsibilities include conducting community outreach, case management services on behalf of clients, collaborate with other agencies and organizations to best assist victims of human trafficking, and advocate for improved systems’ responses to these vulnerable victims.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Represents non-U.S. citizen survivors of trafficking and other forms of co-occurring gender-based violence, and eligible family members, before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), as well as before federal courts.

  • Provides criminal justice advocacy, victim rights advocacy, and criminal representation in post-conviction relief cases.
  • Provides legal representation or appropriate referrals to other civil legal services (as needed).
  • Advocates directly or makes referrals for trafficking clients in a wide variety of legal and social systems, including immigration, criminal justice, landlord/tenant, consumer credit, public benefits, etc.
  • Facilitates clients’ access to intra-agency and external resources.
  • Maintains data relating to client services for grant reporting purposes, and support relevant grant reporting efforts.
  • Represents Sanctuary for Families at community events relevant to Sanctuary’s Anti-Trafficking work.
  • Trains at workshops for staff at legal service organizations, community based organizations, and community members on domestic violence and human trafficking.Designs, develop and implement legal workshops covering dynamics of domestic violence, human trafficking and legal remedies.
  • Provides technical legal assistance on human trafficking to community based and other social and legal services organizations.
  • Collaborates with clinicians, attorneys, medical professionals, local law enforcement agencies, and others having a direct impact on the wellbeing of clients, to secure best results for clients.
  • Performs any other Legal Department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by Director of the Anti-Trafficking Initiative.
  • JD Degree Required;
  • Admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction;
  • Bilingual English and a relevant community language (e.g. Spanish, Mandarin);
  • Strong writing, research and analytical skills;
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, public speaking, and leadership skills;
  • Excellent judgment;
  • Prior experience in criminal and immigration law strongly preferred;
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure;
  • Ability to multi-task, set priorities and navigate complex legal cases;
  • Deep understanding of and ability to work well with people of diverse national, ethnic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds;
  • Energetic and passionate about Sanctuary’s mission of ending gender violence and human trafficking.

Budgeted Salary: $72,933

Work position is hybrid

Vaccination Policy: Proof of vaccination or proof of first dose with scheduled 2nd dose within 30 days is required.
