Job Summary:

As a leading regional shelter serving the East End of Long Island, SASF is now hiring a Director of Development. The Director of Development is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the organization’s fundraising activities including its Individual Donor Giving Plan, Major Gifts Program, Annual Fund, Planned Giving, Special Events and Capital Campaigns. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and works closely with the Board of Directors in all development and fundraising endeavors. The Executive Director will interface with donors from around the country, with an emphasis on Long Island, New York City and Florida.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Responsible for the strategic direction, growth, and overall management of the development department
  • Develop and implement all aspects of donor cultivation and solicitation, including identifying and expanding new donor base
  • Advance and steward individuals, foundations, corporate and workplace-giving relationships
  • Design and build a comprehensive planned giving strategy to promote Charitable Gift Annuities, Endowments, Bequests and other Legacy Giving programs 
  • Solicit gifts on behalf of SASF, both individually and in conjunction with the Executive Director, other staff, board members and fundraising volunteers
  • Plan fundraising events that effectively communicate purpose of the organization, as well as attend public and social events to network on behalf of SASF 
  • Prepare and manage the development department’s annual budget; 
  • Ensure the fundraising database and donor tracking systems are accurate and complete; 
  • Supervise, guide, evaluate, and counsel development department staff;
  • Increase contributions by penetrating the Donor Advised Fund community; 
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to assist in policy making; 
  • Schedule, track and respond to grant funding timeline for proposal development, submission, and reporting 
  • In coordination with the Marketing Director, provide content and communications regarding SASF website, newsletters, press release and social media to promote area of responsibility and ensure compliance with grant requirements
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintains accountability standards to donors, and ensure compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives 

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree 
  • 6+ years’ experience in non-profit fundraising and community relations 
  • Proven ability to recruit major gifts/donors, raise private donations, develop, and manage donor relationships, and motivate staff and volunteers
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of non-profit fund development; animal sheltering development a plus 
  • Proven strategic planning and budgeting skills
  • Experience with Capital Campaigns 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal communication and public speaking skills
  • Ability to learn new software including fundraising platforms such as Donor Perfect and Classy
  • Positive attitude with ability to develop strong partnerships and work well in a team environment
  • Able to work a flexible schedule with regular weekend and evening activities, primarily in the summertime
