Position Type: Part-time, 25 hours per week, Weekends and Evenings

Overview: The mission of The Center for Fiction is to encourage people to read and value fiction and to support and celebrate its creation and impact. Our library collection has been in existence since our founding in 1821 and continues to be a thriving part of our nonprofit. We are a membership library with a collection of literary fiction, mystery and suspense novels, and nonfiction titles about fiction. The Membership Help Desk and Administrative Assistant will be a front facing point person for the membership library desk and will provide clerical support to the Head Librarian and Education Director in educational programming.

Description Details: Reports directly to the Head Librarian. Working closely with the Assistant Librarian in the daily maintenance of library operations and membership floor activity. Provides administrative support to the Head Librarian for reading programs and children’s educational programming. Tasks will include the following:

  • Staff membership desk, welcome incoming members to the membership spaces during afternoon, evening, and weekend hours
  • Perform basic circulation functions including checking books in and out for library members
  • Process new memberships including issuing new member cards
  • Assist in customer service matters with members and the general public visitors to the Center
  • Open/close the library and member space
  • Schedule event times and arranging for both in person and Zoom meetings
  • Distribute contracts and ensure their timely review
  • Work with accounts payable to ensure payment of contractors
  • Monitor class registrations and communicate with class participants and group leaders regarding class times and registration queries
  • Work in collaboration with other Center staff as needed on events and special projects

Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication, attention to detail, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines, able to work independently on assigned tasks and work collaboratively with others, customer service skills, proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Office, interest in and knowledge of literary fiction.

Please note: This is a long-term, part-time, onsite position. The hours are primarily evenings and weekends. Our location is in Downtown Brooklyn.
